Cape Hatteras Light

On Hatteras Island, one of North Carolina's Outer Banks barrier islands, this 210-foot lighthouse (the tallest brick lighthouse in the United States and 2nd tallest in the world) was built in 1870 and in 1999 was moved 2,900 feet to higher ground due to beach erosion (an early indication of climate change). Part of the Cape Hatteras National Reserve, one of our recently published Nifty North Carolina Road Trips: 5 Scenic Sights to Visit by Car
