When most people think of visiting Nepal, it´s usually about trekking the majestic mountains of the Himalayas, especially of Mount Everest, the tallest mountain on planet Earth. But the people who have been making it possible for decades are also well worth getting to known. The Sherpa people are not only famous for their unsurpassed skills in mountain climbing but also for their extraordinary bond with the mountains, their great culture, and their unmatched hospitality. A trip through Nepal’s Himalayan region is not all about the destination, it also includes an opportunity to meet the mountain dwellers.
Sherpas are an ethnic group originally inhabiting Nepal’s eastern Himalayas, mainly in the region of Solukhumbu. The name “Sherpa” is from the Tibetan word shar, meaning east, and pa, meaning people, which stands for eastern people. The term "Sherpa" is commonly linked to mountaineering; however, Sherpa community encompasses more than climbing. Sherpa peoples are involved in farming, entrepreneurship, arts, conservation, and upholding the culture of the Himalayas.
