Despite this state's retrograde reputation, its tourism authority even has a page dedicated to this phenomenon, which it defines as "a gathering of Native American people and their guests who come together to sing, dance, renew old friendships, and make new ones" as well as "the time to focus thoughts on the old ways and to preserve the rich heritage of Native American culture." In addition to a listing of OK powwows, there's also an online calendar you can consult here (the next one is apparently the 70th Annual Comanche Homecoming Celebration in the town of Walters, an hour 40 minutes south of Oklahoma City).
