Hi Meryl,
We live in Mexico and right now our 23 yr. old is doing her " practicas" for her Hotel and Restaurant major at the Maroma Beach Resort in Playa del Carmen which is where all the kids go now, since they consider Cancun for raunchy tourists who are drunk, fondling girls in the elevators, urinating in the streets, and "enjoying" the wet-t-shirt-competitions with Tequila Jello Shooters.... So for the kids who want a little more than "all-inclusive-boringly the same-hotels" with a too-heavy drinking scene, then Playa del Carmen is the place to go-try getting hotel recomendations from Tripadvisor. Our daugher who lived previously in Playa prefers Tulum since it is eco-tourism at it´s finest.

MexicoGuru.com is a good place for searching for accommodations but it is more in tune with Mexico lovers who want an experience that large hotel chains don´t provide. The Department of Tourism has many web pages and they are well designed so that knowing Spanish is not really required. For instance our state has www.morelostravel.com which covers everything a traveler would need to make a choice in where to stay.
