Madrid as one of Europe´s most LGBTQ/gay-welcoming cities

Javitouh These days, Spain is one of the world's most socially progressive countries - for example, it was the third to legalise same-sex marriage, back in 2005 - and has legal safeguards in place for marriage equality, same-sex adoption rights, and anti-discrimination laws. And its capital, despite being ruled by the rightwing Partido Popular, is in turn is one of the its most progressive, and is home to a community of a vigorous LGBTQ community estimatated at around a half million. The…

Landscape of Light: celebrating the city of Madrid´s first UNESCO World Heritage Site

José Balido   In 2021, UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation) honoured Spain´s capital with its first World Heritage Site designation, elevating Madrid to the ranks of destinations with districts or monuments worth preserving for future generations (the larger Madrid community surrounding the capital already had UNESCO sites, including the royal sites of El Escorial and Aranjuez, which make marvelous day trips). The city´s leafy Paseo del Prado boulevard,…

Discovering Madrid´s little known medieval legacy

David Paul Appell I've always had a fascinating for things medieval. Would never want to have actually lived back in the Middle Ages, mind you - perish the thought. But the architecture and atmosphere of the Romanesque and the Gothic have always captivated me. And while my adopted country provides more than enough to delight me on this front year after year, I've been enjoying my home town Madrid more for its marvelous architecture and monuments dating from the mid-16th century onward, when…

4 delightful day trips from Madrid

Santiago López-Pastor Spain's capital is of course magnificent and brimming with amazing stuff to see and do. But visitors should also make time for a daytrip (or if at all possible, and overnighter) to at least one of the marvelous destinations in the Madrid Community no more than an hour outside the city proper, full of history, culture, architectural gems of their own.   read post

  • The respected online Europe´s Best Destinations just released its best in Europe ranking for 2026, based on a vote from readers worldwide, although the site´s editor chooses the shortlist. And I can´t say I´m surprised that Madrid took first place, but what did surprise me was the city that came in second - Nicosia, Cyprus. In fact, there are mostly lesser known destinations on the list, as well, such as Slovenia´s Štajerska region, Câmara de Lobos on Madeira, and Alaçati, Turkey. By contrast, powerhouse Paris came in fifth, Lisbon ninth, and powerhouses like London, Prague, and Budapest didn´t even crack the top 20. I was also bemused by the top pick in 2024 - Marbella, which is of course very nice but also fairly one-dimensional, especially compared to Madrid. Same goes for the number one last year, Monaco. But this does make for an interesting year. https://www.europeanbestdestinations.com/european-best-destinations...

  • Not surprised to read that last year was Madrid´s best ever in terms of tourism - 11.2 million visitors - and this year is on track to be similarly spectacular. I have been seeing tourists all over the place, and not just in the usual "tourist" places, and practically all year round! https://www.madrid-destino.com/en/press/madrid-winds-its-best-year-...
