This commercial hub was founded by Umayyad dynasty caliph Walid Ibn Al-Malik, who ruled from 705 to 715 CE, but was short-lived - partially destroyed and then abandoned after the defeat of his son in 744. Though it´s of course vastly less spectacular than ancient Roman Heliopolis not too far away, I can attest that there´s definitely enough at this UNESCO World Heritage Site to hold my interest!
