Eisenhower Museum/Library and sites in Abilene

I just returned from Abilene where I made the rounds of the Eisenhower sites there.  Abilene is really a lovely community with a thriving downtown and so many nice independent businesses.  In addition to the Eisenhower Presidential Museum and Library, the Seeleye Mansion and Lebold Mansion are fascinating show homes with a unique perspective on life in Abilene.

There's a great gallery of American Indian art located right across the railroad tracks for the Eisenhower Center and a couple of very nice B&Bs to choose from.  I stayed at Abilene's Victorian Inn.  It's all on my mind during this long President's Weekend holiday. Next time travels take you across I-70, be sure to slow down in Abilene.

  • Funny, I was just writing about Gettysburg, which has the Eisenhower National Historic Site -- his former home. But the Civil War battlefield and monuments are the real attraction here, and Abilene is the real Holy Grail for Eisenhower fans. As I get older and angrier at other former presidents, I realize more and more what a free thinker this former general was. Can't imagine what he'd think of the Tea Party, etc.
    • I'm going to have a chapter about him in my next boo, "Mysteries, Myths and legends of Kansas." He certainly falls in the legends category.
