Way up in Petén department amidst the lake of the same name (it's connected to the mainland by a short causeway), Flores is entirely occupied by a small, super cute town - the population just under 43,000, and you can walk from one end to the other in 15-20 minutes. Also the departmental capital, it's about an hour's drive from the amazing Tikal Mayan archaeological site and packed with eateries, shops, bars and so forth, so it makes an excellent base to drop your bags at one of its boutique hotels, guest houses, or hostels.
