I have been reading that the water levels are quite low on the Rhine now. I have been planning to book a river cruise from Amsterdam to Basel in late July to early August. I know that it river levels get too low, we would end up being bused along the route.

Does anyone know enough about water levels to know if low water levels now are likely to mean even lower levels in July-August. I looked at a little history and it appears that river levels typically drop over the summer but I could use some advice from someone with experience.

I don't want to book a cruise if there is a good chance we would end up traveling by bus.

Thanks for any help,

Kathy Parsons

  • These are more like flat-bottom boats ideal for river traffic and not the V-shaped keel of ocean-going cruise ships, so you should be confident about booking a trip.

Be sure you have travel insurance -- something every traveler should have, for every trip -- to protect you for unexpected changes in your itinerary.
