Swiss heritage/culture celebrated in New Glarus, Wisconsin

New Glarus Chamber of Commerce   Just over a half hour from Wisconsin capital Madison, New Glarus was founded in 1845 by immigrants fleeing hard times in their home canton Glarus, in eastern Switzerland,  and these days the locals embrace their town's Swiss heritage with a passion. Traditions from the old country including yodeling…

  • I´m a bit of a language nerd, and speak some German, but when I was in Switzerland I was lost with the local dialect. Youtube´s reigning language nerd is a Canadian named Paul, and I found his video explaining the differences to be pretty enlightening: https://youtu.be/zfX1OFMXUh4?feature=shared
  • Wow a town in Georgia, USA, modeled after a Bavarian village, with German food, a Teutonic-style Christmas market, and this country´s oldest Oktoberfest! https://www.travelandleisure.com/helen-georgia-guide-8405231
  • Recently got back from my first visit to Vienna, and I squeaked by with my little bit of German (and fortunately many locals spoke decent English haha). There is of course a whole dialect of Austrian German, so I downloaded a couple of items off the Internet in preparation - but ended up using very little of it, apart from Servus (hi). Here´s one: https://www.babbel.com/en/magazine/austrian-german-words
20 Vitally Important Austrian German Words
All German languages are not alike. Here are 20 commonly used Austrian German words and how to use them in everyday Austrian speech.
  • I'm still a big Beatles fan after all these years (does that date me much? lol). And not everyone knows that they recorded at least:a couple of versions of their hits in German, dating back to their gigs in Hamburg in the early 1960s: "Komm, Gib Mir Deine Hand (I Wanna Hold Your Hand)" and "Sie Liebt Dich" (She Loves You)." Here's a vid of the latter! https://youtu.be/3vx8qpaKmlk
  • I've visited Berlin several times but never noticed this. Interesting, though - the local dialect is often used in a way that can come across as rude but one speaker describes as meaning "being uncomfortably direct, brutally honest and free." Check it out: https://www.bbc.com/travel/article/20221205-berlins-beloved-and-loa...
Berlin's beloved (and loathed) local dialect
Berliners have a reputation for being generally cold, outspoken and rude. It's lovingly called the "Berliner Schnauze", and how you feel about it dep…
  • I remember being struck, when visiting Namibia many years ago, by seeing local black folks singing rousing German drinking songs in a Windhoek pub. So it was fascinating to watch Drew Binsky's video about the German legacy (and parenthetically, I found out via Wikipedia that “the German language as spoken in Namibia is characterised by simplification and the adoption of many words from Afrikaans, South African English, and Ovambo and other Bantu languages. This variant of German is called variously Südwesterdeutsch (German südwest, southwest, referring to the country's former name, South West Africa); while younger people also call it Namsläng (i.e. Namibian slang) or Namdeutsch": https://youtu.be/kjOH_4NEcAY

Du grünst nicht nur zur Sommerzeit,
Nein auch im Winter, wenn es schneit.

    wie treu sind deine Blätter!

    O Tannenbaum, o Tannenbaum,

Wie oft hat nicht zur Weihnachtszeit
Ein Baum von dir mich hoch erfreut!

    O Tannenbaum, o Tannenbaum,
Dein Kleid will mich was lehren!
