Virginia's Colonial Williamsburg is a family travel classic

Humberto Moreno   William Byrd III was a man of great stature in Williamsburg before the American Revolution. His vast holdings included mills, warehouses and ships, and he owned hundreds of slaves. However due to his lavish lifestyle and gambling addiction, he could not live within his income, lost his wealth, and died - it’s believed by suicide - in 1760. Christiana Campbell operated one of Williamsburg’s most successful taverns, where she hosted the likes of George Washington and…

  • Do you have a place you go to that no one else knows about? We do. You are going to think we've gone off the deep end but, seriously, this is one of the funnest places for us to go for a quick getaway. New trip report, pics, and video today at The World on Wheels: http://tinyurl.com/2aeqmrr

  • Wheelchair hiking? At most places, that means an extended sidewalk around a state park's parking lot. There are a few places, though, where a wheelchair can really get back to nature. On Monday, we featured a beaver pond trail near Redding, California. Tomorrow, we'll be featuring a superb accessible mountain and river trail in California's Gold Country. Today, we feature 8 wheelchair accessible hiking trails in Southern and Central California ranging from urban hills to remote sequoia groves. It's all at The World on Wheels: http://tinyurl.com/3ydq7fv
  • We finish up the week with an extensive finale to our London Trip Report with side trips to Paris and Bath. Roman ruins, pubs, mummies, and the Mona Lisa are on tap today at The World on Wheels: http://tinyurl.com/2daync3
  • Driving in London is just a bad idea. Tube, bus, taxi, or walk...anything is better than driving and paying the congestion charge. We have a new London Transit Report now online at The World on Wheels: http://tinyurl.com/23yt5m2

  • Here's something special for our World on Wheels friends and fans. "Timmy Wheels" is a short documentary about Tim (my son and the impetus behind our site) and his quest to be a sports broadcaster. It has won a couple of awards and was featured at the Smogdance Film Festival. The producer has given me permission to put it on our site, it's only 5 minutes long so take a look when you get a chance: http://tinyurl.com/y5p4l34

  • When is a splurge worth it? Lots of times. Deciding to make our family travel experience budget-friendly or deluxe is to a certain degree a personal decision.

For me and many other parents, the long lines, muggy heat, and time-wasting boredom of just WAITING negatively affects the Orlando theme park experience. There are lots of tips out there for having a budget theme park vacation in Orlando, Florida, but this isn't one of them. If it can be afforded, make a trip to Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure in Orlando easier. Those lines are terribly long, and it's painful to watch little children get bored, scream and whine. Instead, stay at the Loews Portofino Bay Hotel at Universal Orlando; your room key lets you skip those nasty long lines and see less bad parenting all around you. Better yet, really splurge and get a VIP Pass package at Universal Studios Orlando. You get a personal guide who is yours for the day, and who helps your family completely skip the lines and see some of the behind the scenes action at the fun theme parks here. I recommend it for a totally fun and easy theme park vacation.
