Travel in some part of the country was recently become complicated due to the civil war with rebels in the northern Tigray region, but the recent peace deal is expected to improve the situation considerably, and most regions of Ethiopia have remained safe to visit.

Pilgrims return to Lalibela after central government retakes it in civil war

The website Africa News reported earlier this month that after the town famous for its ancient rock churches (travel video above) was once again retaken by government troops from the Tigray People's Liberation Front, thousands of Ethiopian Orthodox believers have once again begun making the pilgrimage and Ethiopian Airlines has resumed flights from capital Addis Abbaba. I´m a big UNESCO World Heritage geek, and I see that on the list of 42 new sites for 2023 Ethiopia got not one but two more, bringing it to a total of 11. One is natural, the Bale Mountains National Park in the central south, and the other is cultural, the Gedeo Cultural Landscape, in the southwest.
