Tourism and biodiversity
Tourism represents more than 5% of world carbon emissions, perhaps 9% because of transportation, mainly air transportation. But this does not mean that it is incompatible with the preservation and enhancement of biodiversity. Opposite would be rather true: no national and wildlife parks financially manageable without tourism, no awareness of biodiversity among local populations who need these tourists. The main problem is the application of norms and standards at international level. It is question of responsibility: so, why to call tourism “sustainable” when we should think in terms of “responsible tourism”. Sustainable tourism without responsibility of the actors ( including tourists) is a “mot creux”, a word which rings hollow.
