The 3 European Capitals of Culture for 2023: Elefsina, Timişoara & Veszprém

Charalambos Andronos/Timişoara 2023/Janos Illesi Annually since 1985, the cultural poobahs of the European Union have designated one or more of the continent's cities (and as of last year it's been three), as Capitals of Culture, focusing on their own cultural offerings and allowing them to organize a series of wider cultural events (many with a strong pan-European dimension) - which bring in considerable additional revenue; foster urban renewal; and raise their international profiles and…

For the 'aves': the art and sport of falconry in Spain

Tom Meaker  Feet firmly planted on the ground, left elbow out, forearm straight, hand and wrist covered with a thick leather glove, I looked apprehensively at the master falconer standing by my side. He had just sent a magnificent Harris's hawk into the air, soaring into the sky, then swooping down towards me. “He won’t attack me, will he?” I asked. “Not unless he mistakes you for a rabbit,” the instructor deadpanned, “and there is no chance of that”, he grinned. He had placed a piece of…

9 U.S. small towns and cities with big music chops

Hundreds of people who were jammed into an amphitheater swayed and clapped their hands in time to music. Not far away, a much smaller crowd listened with rapt attention as a trio combined the sounds of mellow jazz with hip-hop. Music fans gather in large cities like Los Angeles and Las Vegas to treat their ears to favorite melodies and harmonies. Others around the country enjoy their preferred tunes and performers where they live, or close by. read post

Prost! Munich's cultural phenomenon Oktoberfest is back!

Holzijue/Pixabay From September 17 to October 3, the legendary celebration of German beer, cuisine, and culture in Bavaria's capital is returning after a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. • In just 10 days, I have 18 "backers" (including the Canadian Route 66
Association) and have $882 pledged of a $3000 goal to create a
photographic essay book on the people who live and work on Route 66
where it passes through the Mojave Desert (California). I still have 33
days to raise the balance, won't you help me too? You can make a pledge
of $1.00 or more here , on Kickstarter.com . If you find this project worthy, please share this message with your network.
    Thank you,
    Kevin Wong
  • Join Tuza and Simon for a once in a lifetime opportunity that will open your eyes, ears and spirit to the music and culture of West Africa.

The four-week study intensive will take you into the heart of the region’s traditional rhythms, dances and songs, helping you to develop your skills under the guidance of local drum and dance masters.

You can take part in live performances during the tour and participate in some incredible festivals and ceremonies. This adventure will allow you to experience the lifestyles and customs of the Ghanaian people first hand as you live side by side with them in their community.

  • Dear Route 66 Enthusiast:
My name is Kevin Wong and I am a professional travel and landscape photographer who lives in Joshua Tree, California. My business, Mojave Desert Excursions provides guided photo opportunity tours in and near the Mojave National Preserve and I often travel along Route 66 where it passes through the Mojave Desert.

This week, I launched a funding campaign on Kickstarter.com
for a photographic essay book on the lives and faces of those who live on or
near the segment of Route 66 that passes through the Mojave Desert (Ludlow,
Amboy, Cadiz, Chambless, Essex, Goffs and Needles). I will also interview those
that work on the road, the tourists that travel the road, and the passionate
people that preserve and promote Route 66. This project will cost $3,000 and it
was selected by Kickstarter for its project vision and for the quality of reward
gifts. Yes, as a pledge patron you will receive a reward gift for each level of
pledge! There are only 45 days open for this project, so don't delay...please
make a pledge now and send me on the road to record the lives and faces
on "Route 66 - the Mojave Experience". You can make a pledge of $1.00 or more by clicking here. If you find this project inspiring and worthy, please forward this post to your friends and networks. I am open to any and all recommendations and suggestions to this project.

You can follow the project on facebook: "Route 66 - the Mojave Experience"

    Thank you,
    Kevin Wong

  • We have been inspired by West Africa's beauty to organise a photography competition so that you can send us your best snaps of one of the World's most beautiful geographical regions.

We will accept only one photo per person, so choose wisely. The winning photo will be chosen by a professional photographer specialised in Africa! The winner will receive a copy of Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars latest album, "Rise & Shine".

Please post all photos on the West Africa Discovery Facebook page to enter the competition.

  • Hi all, looking to be introduced to African rural culture, but are afraid to throw yourself into the deep end straight away? Well, here is a holiday idea which will give you the opportunity to immerse yourself into African day-to-day life.

"In the West we lead fast, crammed complex lives. We have so much to do, and to get done, and there is little time to stop and do nothing much. In Africa life is much slower, and the days stretch long, hot and unhurried. This is a great place to rest, relax and reflect. There is lots going on, but you can choose your level of participation and be as busy or as quiet as you like."

If you are interested in experiencing the magic of Africa first-hand, have friends that have been going on about travelling to Africa but never have plucked up the courage to go there, or if you just need to relax, kick off your shoes and 'go with the flow', this project is just for you...

Suitable for families - loads of great activities for children of all ages!
