Pioneering Borovets ski resort

A bit closer to Sofia (about an hour 15 minutes) in the foothills of the Rila Mountains, this started as a 19th-century royal hunting lodge that in the 1970s was developed into a Bulgaria’s first ski resort, There are 58km (36 mi.) of runs here and the ski school has a good reputation. The après-ski is lively, and there’s night skiing until 10 pm.
