The best of Belize

Oli Eva Central America´s only English-speaking country has a population of around 397,000 and is about the size of New Jersey and a little larger than Wales. It´s something of a diamond in the rough whose small package can deliver gifts of wonderful islands, beaches, eco-experiences, and even Mayan archaeological sites — and all with fewer crowds and often lower prices than its neighbors. Snorkeling in Belize is a splendid adventure

Andy Blackledge The 700-mile Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System is the world's second largest, and the 190-mile long Belize Barrier Reef (top) is a part of that. Lying from 980 feet to 25 miles off the coast, with underwater caves, more than 100 types of coral and more than 500 species of fish. Top spots include the Bay Islands of Roatán and Utila, along with Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker. You can also opt to snorkel right off the shore at mainland resort areas like Plasencia. Apart from a…

South Water Caye one of '5 of the World's Best Spots for Stand-up Paddleboarding'

The 450-odd cayes (pronounced "keys") off this Central American country's Caribbean coast are truly castaway destinations, and while Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker are the best known, even smaller South Water Caye (just 15 acres) to their south boasts an even more "castaway" feel, with fantastic beaching, snorkeling, diving, kayaking, and yes, stand-up paddleboarding through lagoons, mangrove channels, and over the Belize Barrier Reef, part of Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the world's…

    • Very nice article, Helen. Thank you for sharing.
  • Mesoamerican archaeological sites are among my top passions, and when it comes to them Belize is next on my bucket list, with a dozen of them from the Mayan culture, dating as far back ae 2000 BCE. The website of an in-country tour operator, Slickrock Belize Adventures, provides a great overview here: https://www.slickrock.com/belize-mayan-ruins/

  • More attention is being focused on the earliest hub of chocolate production - since Mayan times - in Belize, where visitors can enjoy tours of artisan chocolate makers as well as chocolate-themed programs by local resorts and restaurants. • Maria, thank you for sharing this article, Maria. One of the favorite tours our guests choose is our Chocolate making tour at Maya Center because of the hands on experience of making the chocolate from scratch along with the education about how chocolate grows is nourished and it's nutritional benefits. These experiences, in addition to the tastings are wonderful. Another emerging and very popular tour our guests are choosing is the Taste Belize tours in Placencia Village. It is a walking foodie tour around the Village where our guests get to sample local foods and drinks from some of our least known options. It begins at a local chocolate store and includes visits to 8-10 other establishments in the Village. It's dinner experience, education and cultural experience rolled into one.
