The just-over-45-square-kilometre (18-sq.-mile) Gobustan State Historical and Cultural Reserve, about an hour outside Baku is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for more than 6,000 ancient rock carvings that date back as far as 20,000 years, depicting people, animals, warriors and battles, rituals, camel caravans, and heavenly bodies such as the sun and stars. There are inscriptions and graffiti too, left by soldiers of Alexander the Great and the Roman emperor Trajan. There´s also a museum on site displaying flints, shells, ceramics, beads, and primitive tools, and well as interpretive explanations and exhibits. And while you´re in the area, don´t miss the nearby almost extraterrestrial landscape of "mud volcanoes" which, driven by (odorless) underground methane gas, bubble and burp.
