Europe’s medieval castles transport travelers back to an era of knights and legends. The 13th-century Alcázar in Segovia, Spain (pictured here), with its fairy-tale-like towers, is one of the most famous and picturesque castles in the world, and others include Edinburgh Castle, perched atop Castle Rock, with breathtaking views and a rich history dating back to the 10th century; Prague Castle, built in the 9th century and visible from much of the city; and the 12th-century Citadelle of Carcassonne in the south of France.
