Maureen, sounds like you really do have a great trip coming up, and in part that's because you're not rushing in and out. I would do the non-safari week before rather than after the safari, so you can shake off the jet lag. After all, sleeping schedules on safaris are wacky enough. Beyond that, I can't answer your question, but I'd encourage you to post it on the Media Only group as well as this page.

The trip of a lifetime (at least MY lifetime) is coming up - I am going to safari in the Masai Mara area in August. I want to make the most of this trip and need a little guidance on what to do while I'm there. I'd like to spend at least a week (either before or after the safari) - doesn't necessarily have to be Kenya. I am a freelance writer and photographer, so any ideas will be considered! Thanks!

Hi Max,

Well to be honest my advise is not completely honest. My first visit to Africa was to Kenya and I liked it very much. However during the same visit to Africa I ended up in Rwanda and that changed my life completely. I fell in love with that country and now I have a Tour Operator Agency over there.
So when I say try Rwanda you probably will not believe me. But you can always ask the people who went there and did not became a Rwanda tour operator. And just in case your next question will be "Is it safë?" Yes its safe, already for 15 years and its clean, very clean!
The country is not bigger then Belgium and very beautiful. The mountain gorillas are the biggest touristique attraction, but the country has much more to offer then that.

One advice: be carefull, Africa can hook you up!

Hello Max,

Your question is a bit the same as asking: I am going to The US and what should I do there? Africa is HUGE, so one thing you have to ask yourself: what is the aim of me traveling there? Once you know that, it will be easier to make a choice. If you go for wildlife I personally find South Africa a bit too tame, although it is a destination with lots of variety.

Hi Max. There are SO many great Africa destinations. It really just depends on what kind of trip you want to have, with what kind of accommodations and budget you have, along with your interests. South Africa is great for a combination of cities, restaurants, museums, history, culture, scenery, variety of activities, and safaris. There are some great introductory packages that include international air. Other safari destinations have more of a focus on seeing and learning about animals. They each have their own unique geography, tribes, animals/birds, density of animals, and density of tourists. By the way, if you've been to Morocco you've been to Africa!!!

Never been to Africa. Friends who have say that South Africa's a great place to start, for the beginner: great game parks, world-class cities like Capetown, etc. Any other suggestions for someone who's never been south of Morocco?
