Chadar the Frozen River Trek. The Chadar Trek in Ladakh is unlike any other Himalayan trek. Walking on a frozen thick glass-like river with dramatic mountains on both sides is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. At only 11150 feet above sea level, Chadar Trek almost feels like an expedition to the North Pole, where temperatures drop to -30 degrees at night, food is transported on sledges, you seek refuge in caves, and life thrives on survival instincts, making it a must-do trip.
The Chadar trek allows you to get to know the Zankari culture up close by meeting locals and experiencing their hospitality. One of the highlights of the Zanskar frozen river trek is the magnificent Nerak waterfall, which is completely frozen from top to bottom. The best time to go on a Chadar trek is between mid-January and mid-February, when the Zanskar river freezes and you can walk on massive slabs of ice that stretch for miles and miles.
