  • I spoke with a couple of Chinese travel companies at the recent World Travel Market in London - clearly luxury travel is a booming market, with groups like the CLTN (China Luxury Travel Network) forming to promote its members' hotels and China more generally.

It's a fantastic country; I'd love to return.

  • Hi Ed, its a good question. In the last 10 or so years China has undergone some massive changes and they definitely recognise the importance of tourism. Each year I return to China I never cease to amaze at the changes and development. I guess in a nut shell, there are many countries that attract tourists for many different reasons - climate, culture, history, price etc. I believe it would be fair to say that China is set to become one of the world's largest destinations as it ticks so many boxes.

Speaking from a travel provider's point of view, there is some very healthy investment taking place in China at the moment. High-speed rail links between Guangzhou > Wuhan and the planned Shanghai > Beijing link which will have you in Beijing in a very comfortable 4 hours are just a couple of examples. We operate luxury golf tours to Mission Hills in Shenzhen where golfers from around the globe can play an amzing 10 championship courses at the one resort. The same resort is completing a sister development on Hainan Island off the southern coast of China which will also offer a resort complex boasting 10 courses. Actually Ed, Hainan Island is set to be another Bali or Phuket - with many 5-star hotels there already and many more planned. Happy to keep you posted on further news as it comes to hand

  • China is seeing more rich people. But it will take some time for people to develop tastes for different travel. AS economy grows fast and people are travelling more, it will be an important market.

  • I look forward to hearing what you have to say when you get back. Best regards, Ed

I am not so sure of that. Mere numbers in population do not indicate a penchant for luxury!
However, i intend to find out as i will be in Shanghai for the ALTM
