TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE IN 2013, WITH THE BEST SITE TO BE IN KENYA
Lake Turkana solar hybrid safaris. In November 3, 2013, a total solar eclipse will pass over equatorial Gabon in Western Africa, Congo, Uganda, Kenya, and finally Ethiopia. Lodwar in Kenya reports a very encouraging “percent of possible sunshine” of 74 percent, strong confirmation of a pronounced decline in cloudiness toward the eastern end of the eclipse track, though the value is so high as to invite a little suspicion which results to a very high resolution which makes it the best point to be during this time of event. There is a penalty to be paid for good weather however, as the duration of the eclipse declines to less than 20 seconds across Kenya and to less than 10 seconds in Ethiopia. For the experienced eclipse chaser in these locations, such a narrow and abrupt eclipse will come with a prominent presentation of the colorful innermost atmospheric layer of the Sun (the chromospheres) and a spectacular view along the axis of the Moon’s shadow.
The total phase of a solar eclipse is very brief. This will be only seen in Kenya for 15 seconds alongside Lake Turkana on the western side of the lake. It rarely lasts more than several minutes. Nevertheless, it is considered to be one of the most awe inspiring spectacles in all of nature which is worth traveling to go see. The sky takes on an eerie twilight as the Sun's bright face is replaced by the black disk of the Moon. Surrounding the Moon is a beautiful gossamer halo. This is the Sun's spectacular sola corona a super heated plasma two million degrees in temperature. The corona can only be seen during the few brief minutes of totality which takes place near Lake Turkana in Kenya come 3rd November 2013. To witness such an event is a singularly memorable experience which cannot be conveyed adequately through words or photographs. This Actual eclipse of November 3 is the total eclipse of the sun throughout the land.
Under rare circumstances, a total eclipse can change to an annular eclipse or vice versa along different sections of the eclipse path. This happen when the curvature of Earth brings different points of the path into the umbra (total) and antumbral (annular) shadows, respectively. Hybrid eclipses are sometimes called annular/total eclipses. The last hybrid eclipse was in 2005 and the next one is in 2013 and will be witnessed in Africa starting from Gabon, Congo, Uganda Kenya and finally Ethiopia.
There are not too many suitable (safe) locations in Africa to view this eclipse, which should, because of the short duration of totality have excellent displays of edge phenomena such as Bailey’s Beads, the chromospheres and diamond ring. Libreville should be a good starting point for maximum (land based totality) and Lake Turkana in Kenya for a real esoteric experience. This location receives 15s of totality at 14h25UT.
The hybrid eclipse is the rarest of the four types of solar eclipses. It starts as an annular eclipse, proceeds to be a total solar eclipse before becoming an annular eclipse again. It is caused when the moon passes in front of the sun and casts a shadow on the surface of the Earth. At first, the moon is not large enough to completely cover the sun. An annular solar eclipse begins.
As the moon's shadow tracks across the surface of the earth, the curvature of the globe causes the surface to rise up a little. This is enough to change the event into a total solar eclipse. As the curvature of the Earth drops away again, the event becomes an annular eclipse once more. Much of the eclipse path experiences the less desirable annular eclipse. The moon is barely able to eclipse the sun so the period of totality is often quite short. Still, it does have a period of totality which makes the hybrid solar eclipse one that is worth traveling to see.
The eclipse moves off quickly across Gabon, and into the Congo, and then the Democratic Republic of Congo at about 14:07 UT. Here, the path of totality has shrunk to just 36 km wide, and the total eclipse will last just 49 seconds. The path of totality then crosses northern Uganda, north-western Kenya, and southern Ethiopia. It finally ends in Somalia at 14:27 UT, with a total eclipse lasting just 7 seconds. Libreville should be a good starting point for maximum (land based totality) and Lake Turkana in Kenya for a real esoteric experience. This location receives 15s of totality at 14h25UT.
At eclipse tours a solar eclipse is one of our passions - which is why we are totally committed to giving you the best possible solar eclipse tour experience. An eclipse tour has 6 years industry experience and is a reputable, knowledgeable, and efficient supplier of quality tours. Being the first time it is going to happen in Africa and in particularly in our country, we plan to give the best we can.
Total solar eclipses are nevertheless rare at any particular location because totality exists only along a narrow path on the Earth's surface traced by the Moon's umbra.
Solar Eclipse Terms
A total eclipse occurs when the dark silhouette of the Moon completely obscures the intensely bright light of the Sun, allowing the much fainter solar corona to be visible. During any one eclipse, totality occurs at best only in a narrow track on the surface of the Earth. During the maximum phase of a total eclipse, the Sun's disk is completely blocked Moon. The Sun's faint corona is then safely revealed to the naked eye.
A hybrid eclipse (also called annular/total eclipse) shifts between a total and annular eclipse. At some points on the surface of the Earth it appears as a total eclipse, whereas at others it appears as annular. Hybrid eclipses are comparatively rare. - A solar eclipse in which the Moon's umbral and antumbral shadows traverse Earth (the eclipse appears annular and total along different sections of its path). Hybrid eclipses are also known as annular-total eclipses. In most cases, hybrid eclipses begin as annular, transform into total, and then revert back to annular before the end of their track. In rare instances, a hybrid eclipse may begin annular and end total, or vice versa.
Partial Eclipse - A solar eclipse in which the Moon's penumbral shadow traverses Earth (umbral and antumbral shadows completely miss Earth). During a partial eclipse, the Moon appears to block part (but not all) of the Sun's disk. From the prospective of an individual observer, a partial eclipse is one in which the observer is within the penumbral shadow but outside the path of the umbral or antumbral shadows.
Annular Eclipse - A solar eclipse in which the Moon's antumbral shadow traverses Earth (the Moon is too far from Earth to completely cover the Sun). During the maximum phase of an annular eclipse, the Sun appears as a blindingly bright ring surrounding the Moon.
Greatest Eclipse - The time in the Eclipse when the the Moon's shadow axis is closest to the Earth's center.
Terrestrial Dynamical of Greatest Eclipse - The excact time when the axis of the Moon's shadow cone passes closest to Earth's center.
Eclipse magnitude - The fraction of the Sun's diameter obscured by the Moon. For annular eclipses, the eclipse magnitude is always less than 1. For total eclipses, the eclipse magnitude is always greater than or equal to 1. For both annular and total eclipses, the value listed is actually the ratio of diameters between the Moon and the Sun.
A Solar Eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and the Earth and directly blocks the light of the sun. Because the moon is located between the Sun and Earth the dark side of the moon is facing Earth and is in a New Moon phase. Like a Lunar Eclipse there are a few different types of Solar Eclipse depending on the moon's position.
In November, 2013 eclipse hybrid Travel will lead a group to Kenya to experience a total solar eclipse on November 3 at the show of Lake Turkana. The rare annular-total eclipse, where the Sun may appear as a bright ring around the Moon will takes place on this date.

9 DAYS HYBRID SOLAR ECLIPSE SAFARI
Country: Kenya
A safari to see the best game parks in Kenya and also the world famous bird sanctuaries of the Great Rift Valley Lakes.
The Mara reserve is 1510 sq km of incredible wide-open landscapes and fertile riverine woodland following the looping meanders of the Mara and Talek rivers. One glimpse is enough to explain its appeal; it is typical savannah, with a mass of amazing wildlife.
Day 1 – Nairobi– Masai Mara
Heading further south towards Narok, we camp at our semi-permanent Talek riverside campsite situated at the edge of the park (next to Talek gate). Here we pitch up tents on the camp grounds or use the small wood cabins if not already occupied. Hot showers and toilets are available in the camp and meals are served in the dinning area..
On clear days, the Mara offers fantastic orange tinted sunsets and you will definitely want to capture this moment while sipping on a sundowner back at our campsite. The Mara reserve is 1510 sq km of incredible wide-open landscapes and fertile riverine woodland following the looping meanders of the Mara and Talek rivers. One glimpse is enough to explain its appeal; it is typical savannah, with a mass of amazing wildlife.
Dinner and over night at the Masai mara sopa lodge, Mara sarova lodge, Simba lodge or Keekorock lodge.
Day 2– Masai Mara
The day is spent exploring the Mara magic. Wherever you go in the Mara you will see a frequent amount of wildlife such as Masai giraffe, baboons, warthogs, bat eared foxes, grey jackals, spotted hyena, topis, impala, hartebeests, wildebeest. Elephants, buffaloes, zebras and hippos also exist in great numbers. It is common to see lions either basking after a heavy meal, or surveying the plains for their next meal. Cheetahs and leopards are harder to spot but are still reasonably common.
The ultimate action here is without doubt the annual wildebeest exodus in July and August when millions of these grass eaters move north from the Serengeti in search of lusher grass before turning south again in October.
Balloon trips are an entirely outstanding way of seeing the savannah plains and the wildlife after which you come back down for a beautiful champagne breakfast. These trips can be arranged at our office upon booking. Dinner and over night at the Masai mara sopa lodge, Mara sarova lodge, Simba lodge or Keekorock lodge.
Day 3– Masai Mara- Lake Nakuru
we leave soon after breakfast for Lake Nakuru national park. This small park (180 sq km) is home to warthogs, waterbuck, buffaloes, reedbucks, and the occasional leopard. White and black rhinos were introduced to the park some years ago and you will find white rhino at the southern end. The park has also retained its reputation as an ornithologists’ delight with more than 400 species of bird found here. We spend the night at Sarova lion hill or lake Nakuru lodge.
Day 4: Lake Nakuru- Kitale.
Depart in the early morning across the scenic Lerochi Plateau (with lunch enroute) towards kitale arriving in the evening. You have the opportunity to visit the Kenya smallest National park called saiwa swamp. 10 DAYS LAKE TURKANA HYBRID SOLAR ECLIPSE
Astronomy safari, Turkana expedition, Solar eclipse lake turkana, lodge and tented safaris, turkana tours, astronomy tours 2013,
Astronomy safari
Northern Kenya is lightly populated, untamed and often barren. Setting foot in these parts is like leaving the 21st century; it is an explorer's heaven, and the variety of tribes that live here are some of the most captivating people in the world. They include the Samburu, Turkana, Rendille, Boran, Gabbra and El – Molo.
This is a 10 day expedition to Northern Kenya that avoids the rigorous journey across the Chalbi Desert but still transverses rugged country to the frontiers of Kenya and the Lake Turkana. Transport is by custom built four by four Land cruisers that seat 7 people and accommodation is in canvas tents that are pitched in the middle of the African Wilderness to create a private camp.
This rugged 1,800-km expedition is run in land cruiser or expedition trucks. You will traverse along some of Africa's worst roads towards the lake Turkana; see beautiful mountain forest surrounded o n all sides by hot dusty deserts, eventually arriving at our camp o n the shores of the Jade Sea (Lake Turkana). We have been offering this as our best selling safari for over 10 years especially for those true explorers and travelers who want to get off the tourist beaten track. You will see a great variety of tribes during the tour and cross the Chalbi Desert .
Day 1 – Samburu
Depart Nairobi in the morning heading north via the shoulder of Africa's second largest mountain, Mt Kenya to the Samburu Game Reserve. Accommodation in our semi-permanent campsite is beautifully set under a canopy of trees or we may pitch tents on the edge of Uaso Nyiro (meaning Brown in Samburu) River. Cold showers are available which are amazingly refreshing in the hot, dusty climates. Over night in Samburu Sopa Lodge 4* lodge.
Day 2 – Marsabit
We head north again along the Trans-African highway to Marsabit (meaning place of cold), an astonishingly cool, green and hilly oasis rising high above the dry heat of the surrounding desert lands. The local Rendille and Samburu people in their bright red outfits, beads and earrings make it a vibrant place. We will visit the Paradise Lake and Little Lake. Here, an indigenous forest and a desert come together to create the most compelling landscape on earth. Elephants and greater kudu abound. The dense forest in the park is also home to a variety of birds. Over night at the lodge inside the National park and as long as the rooms may not be enough due the number of people doing the same safari we will use Kenya wildlife service bandas tented camps.
Day 3 – Kalacha
We depart after an early breakfast through the scenic landscape of the arid north with views of picturesque hills. We arrive and camp at Kalacha, a small Gabbra settlement on the edge of the Chalbi Desert. The Gabbra are an Eastern Cushite people related to the Somali-Rendille in their historical origins in the southern Ethiopian highlands about AD 1000. The men wear traditional shorts and a blanket-cloak and the women wear a wrap-around and head cloth. They are pastoralists, particularly attached to their camels.
Day 4- Sibiloi National Park
This morning, following a delicious breakfast, we will check out of our camp, meet your safari drivers guide and board your safari vehicles as your begin your drive further north to the East of Lake Turkana where Sibiloi National Park is. Upon your arrival you will either use the KWS camps or pinch our tents with the help of our guide and the cook. Over night at Kenya wildlife service bandas or tented camps because we dont have lodges here.
Day 5: After Break fast, Board our buses and drive to the eclipse line which is not far from the camp. This will take place in November 3: 2013 at Maximum eclipse: 14:25:13.4 UT 012.2° 253.6°. The period of totality ends when the motion of the Moon begins to uncover the surface of the Sun, and the eclipse proceeds through partial phases for approximately an hour until the Sun is once again completely uncovered. After the eclipse, we will drive back to the camp to continue exploring the Ancient hominid archaeological site in northern Kenya, east of Lake Turkana, discovered by Richard Leakey in 1968. Cultural deposits there go back perhaps as far as 2.3 million years before the present, and include the KBS and Karari cultural strata. This is where Richard Leakey belived that the first and the tallest man once lived. The skeleton of that man is still in this park.
Day 6 - Sibiloi National Park- Lake Turkana also known as loyngalani
We depart early crossing the Chalbi Desert to Lake Turkana which is the largest desert lake in the world and extends for 288 kilometres up to the Ethiopian / Kenyan border. It is surrounded by volcanic rock and desert. We arrive at our semi - permanent beach village where we have our traditional Turkana Huts; making it a perfect place to relax, protected from the scorching sun and heat characteristic of the climate of this remote area. Oasis Lodge, nestled amongst the Doum Palms in the semi desert of northern Kenya, near Lake Turkana, presents a very special opportunity for an especially unique safari for the more adventurous client. Dinner and over night at the oasis lodge. The Oasis Lodge also offers excellent cuisine.
The Jade Sea, as Lake Turkana is also called, is a remarkable fishing ground, and Albert, the chef, prepares tasty meals from the daily catch. Oasis Lodge is also the scene of the filming of The Constant Gardener, a recent Hollywood production, based on the book written by John LeCarre. Lake Turkana - Oasis Club - It isn't just a safari; it is a journey to another world and an adventure one will not easily forget.
Oasis Lodge also hosts two lovely pools fed by natural hot springs. After one of the activities available, your clients may enjoy the relaxing atmosphere in the shade of the doum palms, a cool drink at the famous bar, or just take a swim in the pool.
Some of the activities available at Oasis Lodge at an extra cost are:
Day trips to Mt. Kulal
Picnics
Boat trips to South Island and fishing for Nile Perch.
Visits to the El Molo Village.
Day 7 - Lake Turkana
the day is spent relaxing and you may visit the local lodge to swim or hire a boat to visit the surrounding area (at an extra cost). Turkana, formerly L. Rudolf is now named after one of the tribes who live on its shores and it is in this area that Richard Leakey uncovered the three million year old fossils of ‘Homo Erectus.’ This pre historic site is now known as the “Cradle of Mankind”. The Lake is also known as the “Jade Sea” because of its remarkable blue – green colour. This is a result of algae particles, which shift with changes of the wind and light, so that the water surface shifts from blue to grey to fabulous jade. The lake is home to the largest population of Nile crocodiles in the world. If the weather permits we take a short sunset boat ride to the surrounding areas. Dinner and over night at the oasis lodge.
Day 9 – Lake Turkana - Maralal
We depart after break fast via the Horr Valley situated between Mount Nyiro and Ol Doinye Mara viewing the breath taking scenery as we continue to climb on torturous, rocky hills to Maralal. Near Maralal is one of the most breath taking scenes in all of Kenya – the Losiolo escarpment, an endless stretch as land drops down to the Suguta valley. Maralal is the unofficial capital of the Samburu people and has a distinctly frontier feel about it, like something out of a ‘wild west’ movie. It boasts a colourful Samburu market and a game sanctuary that lies just outside of town. Maralal is also home of the Maralal International Camel Derby that happens once a year between July and October and attracts riders and spectators from the four corners of the world. Dinner and over night at budget hotel.
Day 10 – Nairobi
Heading south again via Laikipia Plains and Nyahururu we may stop at the Thomson falls named after Joseph Thomson who walked from Mombasa to Lake Victoria in the early 1880s. Shaped by the waters of the Ewaso Narok River, the falls plunge over 72m into a rift, spraying the dark forest below. After picnick lunch we drive back into Nairobi arriving by mid afternoon.
