road trips (56)

I still remember vividly the first time a local gave me directions in Costa Rica:

Go north 700 meters. At the “pulperia” turn left, and go west 300 meters. At the corner where the old fig tree used to be, turn right. Go 175 meters and it’s the papaya-colored house on the left with the black gate.

Sure. So … how do I count meters? Which way is north from here? And how in heaven am I supposed to know where the old fig tree used to be?

Directions in Costa Rica can be confusing

Or, how about the directions to my old apartment in Rohrmoser, whe

In 1975, German band Kraftwerk tried to capture the feel of driving on a motorway with the chorus Wir fahren, fahren, fahren auf der Autobahn ("We drive, drive, drive on the Autobahn"), often misheard as "Fun fun fun on the Autobahn." In fact, this nationally coordinated motorway system earned reputation for being one of the best places to drive in Europe and the ultimate pinnacle of the German driving experience, mostly because of its design and maintenance.

There's no general speed limit, but

Portugal: Understanding Road Tolls

9008704053?profile=original

There have recently been some changes to the way toll roads work in Portugal, with roads that were previously toll-free suddenly becoming paid. Travellers headed for Portugal will come across three different types of roads: national roads, highways and SCUTs.

National roads have no tolls and they're tolerably well-maintained, particularly stretches of road connecting main cities. They have the disadvantage of having lower speed limits than highways or SCUTs. Furthermore, they aren't as direct a r

Keeping Children Entertained On The Road

20120605_kids.jpg

Travelling with children can be a great experience for the whole family, but it can also be an exhausting experience for everyone involved. Children are more prone to boredom than adults (or at the very least are more vocal about it), so having a game plan to keep them entertained is of the utmost importance for the sanity of everyone in the car. Here are a few tips to keep your kids entertained in long car trips.

1. Embrace the 21st century - We live in the digital age. Finding a way to keep you

Road Safety When Travelling

9008702873?profile=original

When travelling, it's always important to take every necessary precaution in order to ensure your safety and that of family. Driving is no exception. Whether your touring the Costal del Sol, or visiting the colourful city of Cape Town, here are some tips to stay safe.

1. Never leave valuables in the car. If for some reason you must leave valuables in the car, don't leave them where they can be seen from the outside. Put them in the trunk, or lock them in the glove compartment. Never leave your do

When visiting any location we should all try and be the best tourist that we possible can be, looking after and respecting our beautiful nature spots.

If you are planning on booking a US car hire and visiting one of the country’s national parks it’s a good idea to do a little research before you travel. Most parks will have their own website that will tell you the park rules such as opening hours, speed limits and they will also list the areas where you can or can’t drive.

For example the Yosemit

My website

One of my favorite ways to travel while home in the States is to do some half-way planning, hop in the car, and hope for the best.  This is how my friend, Andy, and I took two and a half weeks of our summer in 2009.  We crammed two surfboards and what we thought would be enough clothing for two or so weeks in my Jeep.

We planned out our trip to be as cheap as possible so the first stop came from Andy’s acceptance as a guest at his mom’s high school reunion.  So that meant the first le

Driving Tips in Tuscany

Normally I enjoy the lighter side of life, but this post is all business.
IMG_6349.JPG
I'm serious. If you rent a car in the Tuscany region here are some
super important tips and tricks you'll need to know.
1. Don't drive into most major cities. Lucca, Florence, and Siena are all
walking towns. Park on the outskirts of town and walk/taxi it in. You DO NOT
want to even attempt to finagle the narrow streets. Some spots won't even let you
drive in or you're arrested (so there's that too).
2. The Auto Strada is your m

Driving in Costa Rica

Costa Rica is a relatively small country and can be easily crossed from North to South in a day. Roads are mostly one lane, with the exceptions of some parts in the highways, so take your time and be safe. Driving 20km/h (13m/h) over the speed limit or under the influences of alcohol are fined with jail and for your own safety don’t drink and drive nor exceed the speed limits.

There is one main road to the Pacific coast called “Autopista del Sol” and one main road to the Caribbean called Highway

10. UP IN THE AIR SOUNDTRACK: A great movie with some great performances, but the soundtrack is also very good, well about half of it. Mixes new school and old school with some great messages. If you like travel, this is a great place to start with some music.

9: U2 GREATEST HITS. Ok, here's the thing. I'm not a obessive U2 fan or nothing. I just think they got some good tunes, its inspring, and they mean good. They aren't the next coming of Jesus, but, good guys making good music.

Residents of the Alps have spent centuries perfecting the art of living life on steep slopes. One of the most spectacularly serpentine of the switchback-filled roads that ascend and descend these mountains is Italy’s Stelvio Pass, which has 60 hairpin tu

After working very long hours the past few days we managed to clear up the time to finally go camping for a weekend. We awoke early eager to hit the road again (even if only for a few miles).

We've been delayed by weather and work from taking this spring shakedown trip a few times prior to this weekend. We've planned to install some new technology (tv, radio, backup camera, etc) to update some old and non working components.

100 Miles , An Indian Odyssey

http://www.100milesodyssey.com

We at 100 Miles are a bunch of nomads. We = Vidyut Dutta(Vidyut), Milan Dey (Milan), and Soumitra Choudhury (Khokon) have traveled extensively on Indian roads, as avid lovers of the outdoors. In our trips we have gone through the hills, the beaches, the forests, the deserts, the cities and the villages. We have also taken the road less traveled and have stories to tell. On our trips, we have taken in, in liberal measure, the feel of each place, through its people, the

The USA's 10 Worst States For Roads

Every spring after all the snow melts, cities, towns and states make plans to remedy the devastation snowplows and chained tires generate on their roads. As road-repair budgets are weighed by cash strapped states, we decided take a closer look at data compiled by others and determine who had the worst roads in the country.

Four metrics were analyzed to do this.  Each state was ranked on each indicator and the results pooled to generate a cumulative ranking for all 50 states. Washington, D.C. was

Road Trip: Ohio to Las Vegas (and Back)

Once again we had the webcam attached to the rear view mirror and aimed out the front windshield. Thanks to everyone who rode along with us from up to 80+ mph on the Highways to about 1 MPH on the dirt roads back in the Rocky Mountains to the red roads of Zion. All total it was just over 6500 miles through 16 states in about 3 weeks. Highest altitude (noticed on the GPS) was around 10,000 ft.
