Now, twenty years on, that same garden again provides vegetables and herbs, the house foundations have been reborn with a new house above them, knarled olive trees have been brought back into fruit, yet more fruit trees have been planted and an expansive garden of Mediterranean flora occupies the hillside.

by Kyle McCarthy (Family Travel Forum) and Kaleel Sakakeeny

Forty-four per cent of adults bring children (and grandchildren) along on leisure travels. Taken as a group, they take more trips per year (4.5)
than business travelers (3.9), Gen Y (3.9) or Gen X travelers (3.5), according to the 2012 Portrait of American Travelers (MMGY Global/Harrison Group).

Parents, fueled by social media, are becoming more vocal, more demanding and more interested in what travel businesses can do for them and their

I don't have kids and I haven't been a fan of Disney since I was wee little thing, but I was pleasantly surprised yesterday when Disney's Vero Beach Resort introduced me to their pirate-themed dining experience during a special preview. No doubt, the pirate dinners are fun for kids and the kid at heart in us grown-ups, too.

Before the meal begins, a costumed cast member asks diners to participate in a fun ceremony. All those standing must pledge to be good pirates. But the buck doesn't stop there

Our weekend outing to Lake Casitas, on an artificial island in a Ventura County reservoir some 80 miles south of Los Angeles,  was my first camping trip since Girl Scouts, and this time there was no sit-upon or mess kit.  Camping today is a first-class affair, with all the creature comforts of home to go along with all the creatures, and the rest of nature.

From the moment we pulled up to the front gates of Lakes Casitas Recreation Area (http://lakecasitas.info), we felt at home.  The park ranger

Travel for the Unaccompanied Minor

When your child needs to travel alone preparing them well in advance will make the world of difference.  If they know in advance what to expect it will make if fun for them and limit some of the fear or anxiety, especially for TSA.

  • You should educate yourself and your child on the policies and procedures.
  • They should know what to expect and how they should be handled by the airline and staff.
  • Contact the airline for their policies on pricing, age requirements, flight cancellations and delays.

My cousin is probably the most efficient family traveler I know. She has her work cut out for her with 2-year-old and 4-year-old girls. Like a well-oiled machine, she’s ready for every contingency as if preparing for a survival operation. Sticky hands or nowhere to wash before eating? She pulls packets of wet wipes from a handy pocket of her carry-all, akin to Mary Poppins’ bottomless carpetbag. Hungry? She keeps Ziploc bags of healthy snacks and small juices or waters at the ready. Cold? Hot? O

Despite the flight disruptions caused by Hurricane Sandy, 75 travel professionals will convene at the second Family Travel Conference (FTCDallas) to be held at the Omni Dallas Hotel at the Convention Center Nov. 9-11, 2012. You may recall my New Media Travel post about FTC1, in which I raved, "This group of bright, engaged mothers (and some dads) who travel with their kids and run homes and blogs, now run the family travel market and drive some of the most exciting conversations on line."

Like everyone I look forward to my vacation all year and I tend to choose big, noisy, fun cities as my destination. I love New York City and Los Angeles. I prefer to spend my well- earned time off taking in a sold out concert, clubbing and dancing, eating at the Cheesecake Factory and PF Chang and staying in a really great hotel in an excellent location.

But these past few months I felt a mix of guilt and emptiness. I had not returned to Italy to see my extended family for almost 23 years. A lo

Although I'm only getting around to posting this now, during the UK winter our little family spent 2 months in New Zealand visiting friends and family and enjoying the great outdoors in the only way you can truly savour it, camping.  If you are planning to visit the land of the long white cloud during the southern hemisphere summer months, now's a good time to start planning.  Typically the best weather is in late January through February, but you can always expect sudden downpours and changeabl

Pirate attack imminent on the Cornish coast?

Cornwall has so much to offer that it's difficult to decide where to base yourself when visiting this beautiful South Western County, or rather the Duchy of Cornwall as it will soon be officially referred to in tourism campaigns. The historic port town of Charlestown is just one of hundreds of quaint seaside settlements, but well worth making a stop for during any family vacation as there's plenty to keep both adult and kids enthralled.

Monument Rocks: Not Your Typical Kansas

9008722460?profile=original

It has been a long-standing rule that when traveling through Kansas, it is best to do so at night because there is a common thought that there is nothing to see, but I believe I can prove that notion wrong. We had three days, two kids, and a small budget to drive out to one of Kansas’s geographic wonders and back again, finding new places along the way to explore.

The seven-hour drive from Kansas City was always too much to tackle so I had put Monument Rocks and Castle Rock on the back burner f

Travel Tip: The Stay At Home Vacation: Staycations

A weak economy drives families (and all travelers) to seek value-driven vacations, which now often means travel in one’s own back yard, a “Staycation,” a kind of travel that fosters a sense of community, lets people discover their own city, and saves money

We think the best way to enjoy a “Staycation” is with The CityPASS ticket booklet. Thinner than your iPod, and full of homegrown bargains and deals at a dozen or so top cities, l

Sugar Cane Train Maui Steam

My 6 year old boy loves trains, much like any other boy his age, so we HAD to ride the Sugar Cane Train while in Maui.

Initially, our hotel concierge suggested we take the train to Lahaina and then walk to our whale watching tour spot.  However, upon talking to the gal at the Pacific Whale Foundation who said it’s about a 6 mile walk and too far for a little one, we did our train ride into Lahaina on a sig
