According to the United Nations, sustainability is “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” Costa Rica pioneered sustainable tourism over the past decade through its Certification for Sustainable Tourism Program (CST), validated as a glo

Kayaking in Costa Rica's mangroves

9008837865?profile=originalOne of my most favorite tours at Playa Nicuesa Rainforest Lodge in Costa Rica is to go kayaking in the mangrove estuary at the Esquinas River, and then snorkeling in Golfo Dulce.

There is a magic in peacefully gliding along in a kayak; the only sounds coming from small splashes of kayak paddles sliding through the water, the songs of birds, and the occasional explosion of noise from rainforest insects. Tangled mangrove roots stretch down into silty water like tentacles, while multicolored crabs

9008834895?profile=originalOne of the amazing things about Costa Rica is that there are still remote, wild, little-known places to discover and enjoy … places to experience new adventures, beautiful scenery, fascinating nature and wildlife.

Maquenque Eco-Lodge in northern Costa Rica is one of those hidden places. The five-year-old Costa Rica eco-lodge is located in Boca Tapada in the hinterlands of northern Costa Rica, only 15 kilometers from the Nicaraguan border and that country’s vast Indio Maiz Biological Reserve. To

9008826294?profile=originalEvery young child has a special place where they feel happiest. For Fernando Madrigal, as a young boy growing up in Costa Rica, that place was his grandparents’ farm – the Finca La Troya in the Orosi Valley of Cartago.

“I spent practically all of my childhood and youth on this farm until my grandparents sold it,” reflected Madrigal. “I remember that La Troya was a magical place. There was a place at the top of the farm where there was a mountain with primary forest. My uncle, Rodrigo Madrigal Mo

This isn’t some exotic zoo, but rather the Osa Wildlife Sanctuary on Golfo Dulce in the South Pacific of Costa Rica. The Costa Rica wildlife refuge helps orphaned and injured animals that are indigenous to this southern Pacific rainforest. Sadly, many of t

Located at the heart of one of Argentina's most popular eco-tourism destinations is the port city of Puerto Madryn. From this central point eco-tours depart daily for whale watching, visits to the sea lion colonies, the penguin settlements, wildlife parks, dolphin watching, and much more of the local wildlife. Tortuguero Canals & National Park, Costa Rica

Tortuguero, translated as "Land of turtles" is one of Costa Rica's must-see regions. A navigable network of lakes, canals and lagoons that cross the National Park of the same name from Southeast to the Northwest. As a general rule, nature watching is amazing, but the area is also blessed with the nesting of the Green Sea Turtle, an awesome phenomemon that can be observed every year from July to October and that attracts observers from all over the world.

Because of its remote location, and the l
