Cruising Egypt's Nile

A first time visitor to Egypt who wants a classical (pharaonic antiquities) experience would do well to book a Nile cruise. Of course modern airlines shuttle tourists to the southern region of Egypt, but historically the Nile cruise was really the only way to visit the temples and tombs located along this stretch of the river. It is still a popular means of visiting upper Egypt and has many advantages to other means of travel.

First of all, it is very nice to unpack once and have your hotel trave

Apologies to my friends and colleagues in the cruise industry or who are cruise fans, but I’m just not that into cruising –  I’d much rather spend my time and money actually experiencing destinations rather than spending most of my trip on a ship (no matter how tricked out), with just occasional, usually frustratingly fleeting tastes of ports of call. There are, however, some cases where a cruise is clearly the best way to experience the most in the most efficient amount of time (unless you hav

Transatlantic Cruising: America to Europe

I recently went on my first-ever transatlantic cruise. I've been to Europe more than a handfull of times but I'd always flown there in the past. I learned something about myself on this trip: cruising is much more my style. We were on a Norwegian Cruise Line ship and it was a remarkable way to kick off our YMT vacation in Europe. Two weeks on the high seas in the height of hospitality and luxury!

I can see the appeal of cruising; I've certainly enjoyed the other cruises I've been on. It's a verti

People always ask me why I love cruising so much. What makes it so special? They ask me this because I once worked on a cruise ship. I love cruise ships because I love the ocean. But what make a cruise ship so special? Well my favorite thing about a cruise ship is the sail away. I know that you also sail into a port but that usually happens when you are fast asleep in your cabin encased in your soft, high thread count luxury sheets. But sail away is a time when most of the passengers gather on t

The river towns in Belgium don’t receive the credit they merit. At least that’s what Pierre-Yves Dalem, president of GET to Belgium thinks. And I couldn’t agree more. Not only are they attractive destinations, but they depict ingenuity at its finest. Maria Lisella, contributor to Jax Fax Magazine, uncovers these hidden gems like they deserve.

Happy Birthday, Titanic!

“God Himself could not sink this ship,” a  crewman of the Titanic said to one Mrs. Albert Campbell, as she boarded the ship in Southampton, England

In May 1911, the RMS Titanic gracefully slid  into  the bustling harbor of  Belfast, Northern Ireland, where she was built by Ireland’s skilled ship builders of the Queen’s Yard of Harland & Wolff
A crowd of some 100,000 people cheered the birth of what was then the largest movable manmade object in the world.

Fast forward to April 14, 1912.

Weltenburg Abbey, Danube Gorge

One can catch countless glimpses of stunning scenery along the Danube River. However, Janeen Christoff, special contributor to Travel Age West, recommends visitors craving the crème de la crème of natural wonders should take a ferryboat through the magnificent Danube Gorge. The gorge, aka the “Pass of Weltenburg,” in Bavaria offers some of the river’s most fascinating sites.

The gorge was astonishingly created when the river shifted and its waters, consequently, ca

Venice Floats My Boat

On the day we left Venice there were seven cruise ships (7!) docked at the Porto di Venezia, a short walk from the apartment Jerry and I were renting.

The ships had names:

The Happy Dolphin,

Europa Palace,

Crystal Serenity,

Ocean Princess,

names that conspire to transport you away from the reality of being on a boat with thousands, all clamoring to get out and onto the slender, temporal islands of Venice.

The ships are massive: towering white behemoths out of all proportion to the delicate scale of th

What NOT to Do If Your Cruise Ship Is Sinking

RAY+LIFEJACKET.jpg

Last Sunday night the Costa Concordia sank off the coast of the island of Giglio, enroute to Civitavecchia, a port I had visited many times working for Princess Cruises. I would like to say that in all my years at sea I never encountered a captain like Francesco Schettino. I considered all the captains kings of their ship, they were all very professional, attentive and if I have to admit it, a little bit scary.
While normally I am not one to comment on ship safety t

Seg

Having been to over 80 countries, many times I am asked, “what’s my favorite place?”  Now that’s a tough question. I have so many. Which brings me to the question, “What’s your trip of a lifetime?” For many a trip like a safari in Kenya’s Masai Mara just may be that one  trip that you only take once in a lifetime. Ask 100 people, and you just may just get 100 different answers. I like to say, “travel is subjective.” Perhaps you do not like my dream trips, as truly one person’s trip to Australia

When looking at the cost of a cruise in the Mediterranean, one of the largest expenses is shore excursions. Most people assume that since they are in a foreign country, it makes sense to pay the high price for cruise sponsored excursions. While these excursions do provide the traveler the guarantee that the ship will not leave without them as well as a licensed guide, many ports are so easy to tour on your own that the DIY option

What Makes a Good Cruise Review?

9008664681?profile=originalCruize Cast: Cruise Blog
Today, I was inspired by a blog post on MeetOnCruise.com http://meetoncruise.com/blog/who-wrote-that-cruise-review to write almost a companion piece. That article asked whether or not it matters who writes a cruise review as to if is trustworthy or useful. As I began thinking about this question, I came to the conclusion that, for me, who writes the review is not nearly as important as what they say. So, what DO I look for in a cruise review? Details and honesty.

A Visit to Ephesus, Turkey

9008645691?profile=original

When I first visited Turkey, I did something I won’t be able to do again. I gave the coach driver a 2 million lira tip! Shortly after my visit, the revalued their currency, simply by deleting the word ‘million’. The Turk with the price of a packet of cigarettes in his pocket is no longer a millionaire!

But, we weren’t there to marvel at the currency. Most of the shopkeepers in the resort town of Kusadasi, where our cruise ship called on its tour around the Aegean Sea preferred to take Euros, an

Choosing a Cruise

James and I are in the process of choosing a cruise for December, and let me tell you, it is not easy. Due to the podcast and the website, we want to have as many cruising experiences as possible, so we can't really choose a favorite line and stick with it like most people do. (Although this will really hurt our chances at any loyalty programs) There are so many considerations that my head is spinning at this point. It is difficult to decide what priority to give each consideration. But, I will
