Adventure Race World Championships event kayaking, Costa RicaImagine this Costa Rica vacation: Traverse the entire country from coast to coast and north to south, but only using mountain bikes, kayaks, rafts, zipline cables, and your feet. Sleep under the stars wherever you may be – mud, sand, grass field, rocky stream bed – but only for a few hours at a time. Brave the thrills of mosquitoes, venomous snakes, crocodiles, rain, boiling sun, and sweltering rainforest. Do that for about six days straight with three of your friends, but with the added adrenal

Sometimes the most authentic way to experience a destination is with a small group led by an expert guide. Such was the case when my neighbor Daira Paulson went snorkeling in Micronesia last year.

“We took a Sea for Yourself snorkel trip to Yap and Palau, where we snorkeled in clear warm water with a wide variety of colorful fish and coral. It was a spectacular experience. The group size is limited (we had nine).

“The company owner, a marine biologist, and another marine biologist who has lived in

An Unexpected Adventure in Puerto Rico

IT COULD HAVE BEEN FUN

By Denise Mattia

The day began at the crack of dawn with a journey from Old San Juan into the center of Puerto Rico, to the Toro Verde Adventure Park in Orocovis.  As we took our seats in the Aventuras Tierra Adentro bus, I was skeptical about the forthcoming escapade when Rosario and Hannibal began their comedy routine, replete with sound effects and the Raider’s of the Lost Ark background music.

The ride was broken up by a pit stop and breakfast at a roadside bodega.

On July 24, Peru marks 100 years since Hiram Bingham, a Yale professor sponsored by the National Geographic Society, came upon the vine-covered ruins. Bingham and his team, with the approval of the contemporary Peruvian government, cleared the site, excavated and presented Machu Picchu to the world in high romantic style (you can read Bingham´s original National Geographic piece about the discovery and browse his incredible photos here). The month culminates in the larger festivals of Corpus Christi and Inti Raymi, which highlight the Colonial and

River Rafting in Nepal
river-rafting-in-nepal.jpg

Nepal as a holiday destination is plain fantastic. It enthralls all who enter. One of the best ways to explore and discover this land is to get away from the towns and roads and embark on a rafting and trekking. Far more than just a wet roller coaster ride, Nepal’s river journeys are the essence of escapism. On a river expedition there are no hassles, no stress, and only a very convoluted sense of time.

The best in Asia and some of the best in the world:

To be human is to live for adventure. Many of us will perhaps only visit a destination once in a lifetime. Others will go back to familiar places or seek out new dreams. Here are five adventures that you sure do not want to miss before you leave the planet. I picked five of my favorites: Playing a round of Golf in the birthplace of Golf at historic St. Andrews in Scotland, Scuba Diving in the crystal clear waters of the Red Sea, Sky Diving over Moab in the U.S. state of Utah, River Rafting on Fu

The latest buzz word eco has unfortunately triggered travel suppliers to saturate the market with hundreds of loosely understood eco holiday-labeled travel products, causing consumer confusion as to what the term ecotourism truly represents.

Good intentions aside, while travelers want to make responsible vacation purchasing decisions based on ethical environmental standards for sustainability and conservation rather than marketing tactics, some common pitfalls befall most, including:

Our day-long adventure took us South (photos at the end of the post!), zipping with our chatty driver out of the historic center of Cusco. We passed the city’s more modern urban areas, watching locals hurry about their daily business and hankering for a stop in one of the many “pollerias,” where spicy rotisserie chicken is served dripping and with avocado. We sped through the small towns just outside of Cusco that each specialize in a type of food. For example,

Rio de Janeiro is a great place for rock climbing, and one of the more difficult climbs, but definitely most beautiful ones is Corcovado mountain (also referred to as K2), on top of which stands the most famous landmark of Rio de Janeiro: the statue of Christ the Redeemer. When a good friend of  mine invited me to do this climb, despite not being a real rock climber, I didn’t think twice and accepted.

The climb starts at 500m above the city. You can hike the whole way to the base, but we took th
