The second largest city in Egypt, Alexandria has an atmosphere that is more Mediterranean than Middle Eastern and is famous for its Roman remains. With your own Egyptologist guide to lead the way. Your first stop in this historic city is the catacombs of Kom al-Shuqqafa, a Roman burial site whose family tomb reveals the merging of Egyptian and Roman art and architecture. Descend below ground to visit the tomb and Caracals Hall. Continuing the Roman theme, the next site your guide will show you is the Roman amphitheater, possibly the best preserved Roman site in Egypt. The site also includes the remains of a Roman street and homes. After lunch (additional cost) you will visit the famous Alexandria Library. In contrast to the ancient architecture found throughout Egypt, the Norwegian-designed building is a striking piece of modern design. Many times the label simply indicates the contents with a brief description of origin and flavor. But sometimes, labels go beyond the basic requirements with a higher purpose. Campari and Fonseca Bin 27 Port are two brands with labels promoting indigenous art.

Campari

Campari's art label is very fiery...vibrant! And this most accurately portrays what's inside the bottle. This spirit can be sipped straight, but when mixed in classic cocktails like the Negroni or Americano, its raw herbal essence with hints of syrupy sweetness on the finish opens up many flavorful possibilities with a wide range of base spirits. Its distinct red color adds flare and deeper hued passion to the presentation. The new limited edition art label, created by Italian artist Ugo Nespolo, reinterprets a Leonetto Cappiello Spiritello print commissioned by Campari back in 1921. Nespolo wanted to bring a colorful, contemporary, and eye catching twist to this classic yet honoring Cappiello's original work by recreating the memorable red clad goblin set amid an oversize spiraling orange rind. He also added a striking background comprised of abstract geometric shapes in striking shades of blue.

Fonseca Bin 27 Port

Fonseca Bin 27 Limited Edition Artist Seriesis now debuting its first, limited-edition Artist Series, a special release of Bin 27 available October through December 2012. A blend of premium reserve wines aged 3-4 years in neutral oak vats, this rich red has a velvety texture with luscious black currant, chocolate and cherry notes. Featuring a label by the late Sebastiao Rodrigues, a revered Portuguese designer whose work drew on the country's rich graphic traditions. Depicting a Portuguese fisherman in a traditional fishing boat on the Duoro River which has played a key role in the Port trade for centuries, this image was widely used in 1950s tourism postcards. Another remarkable aspect of Fonseca's Artist Series campaign is the fact they've partnered with Waterkeeper Alliance to sustain the future of viticulture in the historic Douro River Valley. “Protecting the water is integral to preserving this region”, says Head Winemaker David Guimaraens. “Continuing my family's winemaking legacy would be impossible without long term stewardship of land and water.”

Photos courtesy Steve Mirsky. ()

The valley is really spectacular, a “must see,” and certainly a absolute destination for any lover of Port.

The hills are carpeted with terraces of grape vines that rush and fall away, down toward the river’s banks.

The best way to take it all in is probably one of the many Douro River boat rides, or the very charming, tiny steam train that winds through the valley.

If Vasco do Gama, Magellan and Henry the Navigator fortified themselves with Port, the country’s most famous product, it might have made their journeys less horrific.

But Port wasn’t created until the 17th century, and today it’s undergoing a renaissance.

This easy-going, southern European country produced navigational giants that dominated the sea routes of the world, and controlled colonies as diverse as Brazil and Angola.

But what it controls today is perhaps more precious.

According to international law, only Port produced in Portugal can be called “Port.”
And this sought after “liquid ruby” must come from one section and one section only of the land: the upper Douro Valley in the remote, north- east part of Portugal.

These are the demarcated Port vineyards of the world for this “Vinho de Vida,” wine of life.

Oporto itself is an elegant, old city, rich in Baroque cathedrals, winding, cobblestone streets, twisting alleys and huddled 17th century homes, still inhabited by the original families.

At night, it’s even more artfully lighted than Paris.

The lighting scheme dramatically illuminates the old cornices and Rococo facades, and in the bright light of day, colorful bits of laundry wave in the breezes from the river. The city was declared a UNESCO site in 1996 because so much of the town is still authentic.

Sleek crafts slip silently along the river carrying oaken casks of Port on their open decks. Cafes line the river lifting silent toasts to the boatmen

At the various quintas (Port Wine estates) bare-footed groups of men and women crush the grapes in stone vats (lagares) accompanied by Portuguese musicians, and followed by a very happy celebration.

Primer on Port

Port is wine to which a “grape spirit” has been added to “fortify” it.
Originally designed to protect the product during it’s long Atlantic sea voyage, the addition of the “grape spirit” also stops the fermentation process, allowing the Port to age without “turning,” resulting in a a full-bodied, rich beverage.

• Vintage Port (a premium at the liquor store) is aged in casks for two years, and further ages for between 10 and 50 years in the bottle Thus the price, and the delight. Vintage Port typically must be consumed within 3 days.

• Late Bottled Vintage (LBV) “rests” for 4-6 years in casks, is bottled and ready to drink. They don’t improve with age.

• Tawnys “rest” or age in casks between 10 and 40 years and are then bottled. However, the year of bottling for an authentic Tawny must be on the label as well as the vintage year.
The classic “pairing” for full-bodied Port is cheese: blue cheeses such as Stilton or Roquefort in particular, or with desert at the end of the meal.

But truthfully, today’s Port aficionados are drinking it anytime and with whatever pleases them.

Saude!

Excursion To Giza Pyramids and Sakkara Sightseeing Tour From Alexandria porthttps://tripatini.com/profiles/blogs/excursion-to-giza-pyramids-and2011-05-12T14:00:00.000Z2011-05-12T14:00:00.000ZEbrahimhttps://tripatini.com/members/Ebrahim

Morning time you will be picked up from your cruise at Alexandria port by your Egyptologist guide who will accompany you in an air conditioned van, drive around 3 hours to the famous Giza Plateau, home of Egypt signature attractions to visit the Great Pyramids, ONE of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world including the Great Pyramid of Cheops, middle pyramids of Chephren and the little one of Mykerinos and mysterious Sphinx, the Father of Terror for the ancient pharaohs, the tour includes visit to the valley temple facing the great sphinx.
