We both had limited budgets but we wanted to stay in a nice hotel, hire an AC cab and explore the streets of Delhi with style and we did that in November 2018. We did it all in 6000 INR (81$) and set a fine example that holidays aren't just money seekers. They can be cheaper if you make right decisions in accommodation, transportation and good knowledge of must see tourist spots. So just checkout my side of the story.

1. Hire a Cab from Google Suggestion : Excellent Services

Ok we can't ramble in the city on foot, so we searched on Google and found the delhi sightseeing tour packages from a cab company named SRM Holidays. They charged a total of Rs 2200 for 2 days with AC Swift Dzire car, plus a local driver and gave a city tour guide for Redfort.Cab was air-conditioned and very well in condition. Places were →Qutub Minar →Red Fort → Raj Ghat → Jantar Mantar →Parliament House →India Gate →Lotus Temple →Akshardham Temple→Iskcon Temple→National Museum→Gurudwara Bangla Sahib →Delhi Local Markets.

First we searched a cheap hotel near Jaipur as the taxi guy options were a bit expensive. So we searched some budget hotels in Delhi and finalized Hotel Ajanta. It was for INR 2800 for 2 days and 2 complimentary dinners. So by 10:00 AM we were Hotel. The hotel is just near the Delhi Local market. This one definitely does - I have to tell you, Dubrovnik justly deserves its title "Pearl of the Adriatic."

I mean, where else can you find marble streets lined with baroque buildings all topped with red tile roofs? Add in that the whole pretty city is surrounded by intact city walls... and it's no wonder it's a favorite holiday destination for almost everyone who visits.

The first thing we did once we were settled in walked the city walls. They are one of the city's main tourist attractions, and why not? The walk around the city offers outstanding views into the Old Town and out to the Adriatic. There's no better way to get a feel for Dubrovnik's history and architecture.

There are several places where you can climb up to the city walls, and there is an entrance fee. It's about 1¼ miles (2 km) around the whole circuit, so it's a good idea to bring water and wear sunscreen, especially in the heat of the day.

The famous red tile roofs were badly damaged when the Yugoslav National Army laid siege to the city for eight months during the war of the 1990s. With the help of UNESCO and nations all over the world, Croatia has managed to repair most of the roofs. You can see the evidence by the difference in the colors of the tiles.

rusm

Walk the length of the main street, called the Stradun or Placa. It's only approximately 1,000 feet long (300 meters) from the Pile Gate to the Ploce Gate in the city walls. The entire length is a pedestrian zone. There are churches and museums and galleries to see, but we think just wandering the city and soaking it all in is the main draw.

Go out the Ploce Gate and sit on the harbor. Wander side streets within the city and find great seafood restaurants.

You can fly into Dubrovnik or come on a tour. It has become a major stop for cruise ships on Mediterranean cruises. Renting a car and visiting the Dalmatian Coast on your own is easy and fun.

Most of the hotels are located outside of the city walls. That's convenient if you drive in... but we wanted to stay inside the city walls. We parked the car at a parking lot just outside the walls, and we dove in to explore.

There are a couple of hotels inside the city, but the most reasonable ones tend to fill up fast. Most folks thought that ALT was synonymous with five-star resorts and high-end cruise ships. In those days, I spent a lot of time defining “authentic” as it applies to travel.

But times have changed, and now a whole lot of people endorse the concept while acknowledging that it doesn’t mean the same thing to everyone.

Carsten Becker arranges custom itineraries in Germany and other parts of Europe through his company i2c Tourmanagement and believes that “luxury always depends on the viewpoint of the customer.”

“For one of my clients from New York (living in an apartment in Trump Tower and owning a villa on the Bahamas) it was pure luxury to be taken to a hot dog stand at Frankfurt train station and eating a Polish sausage with homemade mustard.”

Sean Flynn, a luxury travel consultant in Brazil (sean.britagent@gmail.com) says “Some might think a luxury holiday is going somewhere where it is quiet and getting away from the day to day slog of the big city and their job, while others think it’s going to a spa to be pampered.”

Glynn Burrows who offers custom tours in England says “Luxury is the ability to do what you want when you are on holiday. I hate being told when to get up and how long I have to look around a stately home, museum, or antique shop. If my guests see something interesting, we take a detour."

Then he added “Luxury for our Queen would be the ability to walk down the High Street and look around the shops on her own or with her daughter, but no amount of money can possibly buy that for them.”

Patrizia Antonicelli, who arranges travel adventures in New Mexico and the American Southwest through Seven Directions, says “Luxury is twofold. It’s about self-indulgence and pleasure, but not only. Discerning travelers are ready to spend money for learning experiences, excellent service, and personalized programs.”

Nanci Benefiel of Cabo Vacation Rentals says “Luxury is much more than spas and resorts. It’s that special experience and individualized service.”

NV Yacht Charters’ Nancy Van Winter agrees: “It’s all about attentiveness and personalized service.”

And if you’ve been following this blog for awhile, you know what I think: Authentic Luxury Travel means having real experiences – not being a tourist, but savoring the local culture without sacrificing comfort and convenience. Sure, five-star lodging is often a part of this, but I think attentive service and custom itineraries that allow for spontaneous detours are just as important.

So now it’s your turn. After all, isn’t my tagline simple enough?: “A Better Understanding of Food Through Travel” Well probably not. First of all, here’s what I’m not. I’m not a food critic, columnist, celebrity chef, or culinary expert in any way. What I am is a writer who is extremely interested in learning about the ever evolving way we interact with food and how it makes different cultures unique and interesting. Would it really be worth flying across the globe spending thousands of dollars only to be surrounded by people like you eating hamburgers and pizza? This brings me to my experience on the road outside Boston covering trails for my upcoming hiking guidebook. My travels took me through the towns of Whittensville and Norwood. This being Massachusetts, these towns certainly had their share of historic character. But like many towns across the United States, they were also victims of strip, bigbox, and chain development on the main thoroughfares.I was hungry for lunch in Whittensville and readily saw the usual fast food culprits. Here I was lucky. It took me 2 minutes to meet my match. Right on a 4-way intersection across from Burger King was New England Pizza…a truly generic name but a local Italian joint run by Greeks who certainly didn’t mess around with the calzones! The spinach, brocolli, and cheese were super fresh and as you can see abundant. At the end of the day, I checked into my hotel right on Route 1 in Norwood. Room service was out of the question

and traveling alone, didn’t want the hassle of a sit down dining arrangement. I needed some good takeout. So I hopped in my car and scoured the boulevard. Took one look at Stop and Shop’s salad bar and immediately exited. Passed by Panera Bread, Bertucci’s, Taco Bell, TGI Friday’s…strip malls with chains ad nausem! No Mom and Pops to be found…a veritable wasteland until, wait, down on the bottom of a lit sign in front of a plaza I saw something. Sabb’s Market Mediterranean Food. I swung by, pulled through the lot, around a corner, and there it was. An oasis filled with activity. I walked inside and ended up buying 3 bags of groceries in addition to my bulging combination plate loaded with chicken and beef shawarma with rice, hummus, and assorted fresh veggies. My groceries included green almonds in the shell; 2 Fatayer B’Jibne , feta cheese pastries deep fried to a golden brown; and some flavorfully seasoned sesame sticks. So if you’re like me and care about cultivating unique foodways and supporting local business, we have to go out of our way to explore them. Even in our hometowns we must “travel” a bit more. Take 5 extra minutes to get on the other side of the highway, wait an extra 10 minutes for the dish to be prepared from scratch, and in some cases pay a few dollars more for locally grown fresh or unique imported ingredients. The rewards are unforgetable flavors, culturally reflective dishes, and a personal connection with the cook who’s usually also working the counter. A far cry from heat lamps, supply chains, and supersize campaigns!May we keep breaking bread and learning together. If there’s something you want me to examine in more depth, let me know. I’ll look into it for you and report on my findings.photos courtesy of Steve Mirsky
The Importance of "Going Local" in Adventure Sports Travelhttps://tripatini.com/profiles/blogs/the-importance-of-going-local2010-04-03T18:46:41.000Z2010-04-03T18:46:41.000ZAlex Narracotthttps://tripatini.com/members/AlexNarracott
As the local travel movement gathers pace (www.localtravelmovement.com), and debates rage, we thought it was time to wade-in with the adventure sports perspective and suggest a few other good reasons why participants have plenty to gain from following a 'go local' approach.

Whatever your interests and motives for travelling, the benefits of local travel are well documented and often screamingly obvious - get to know the real people and places you are visiting, and ensure your trip provides maximum benefit to them too. In the realm of adventure sports, these two tenets of local knowledge and local involvement in adventure tourism become even more imperative.

Let us deal first with the importance of local knowledge. Who would set off from home to climb a Himalayan peak without first consulting the local mountaineering community? Surf a new break without talking to the local surfers? Head out on a ski tour without getting the local perspective on current conditions and routing? A guide book can get you so far, but it is only by talking to the local sports community that you can ever discover the best spots, the best times to go, and avoid the local, often unpredictable, dangers. Best still, employing well respected local guides and hosts can turn a great trip into an unforgettable one - allowing you to maximise your available time, while no doubt helping you avoid a few nightmare moments in unchartered territory! This is well known and fairly self evident to all who regularly practise adventure sports, and brings us neatly onto more complex issues surrounding local involvement.

'Localism' - locals becoming aggressive and threatening towards new visitors at their local spot is a problem many have come across (perhaps most widely among surfing communities, though certainly not limited to there). In some cases, this is understandable. As adventure sports uptake continues to grow, and mass adventure tourism herds’ people into a growing number of 'must-do' spots, the locals can often feel crowded out and alienated in their own back yard. This is where 'going local' and travelling with well-respected local guides and hosts can get you access and insights into places and people that you simply would not be able to otherwise. It also gives 'ownership' back to the locals as proud hosts and stewards of their area, more likely to welcome respectful visitors to share and experience their natural playground.

Perhaps less widely appreciated is the importance to conservation of local 'ownership' of their adventure travel industry. Adventure sports travel naturally involves interacting with some of the most pristine eco systems on earth, from marine reserves to mountain parks. All other environmental arguments aside, protecting these areas is vital to our continued enjoyment of them - something that no true adventure aficionado can deny. By developing an adventure travel industry with the local population as the main stakeholder and economic beneficiary, you suddenly have the perfect incentive for the local communities to become engaged in the protection and preservation of the natural conditions at these spots.

Experience, access and sustainability. Three very good reasons why the adventure world as a whole - traveller, host and intermediary - should all being looking to go local at every opportunity. I'm sure there are plenty more beyond this quick summary, so looking forward to hearing other peoples thoughts on this.

To join the debate visit http://www.muchbetteradventures.com/news/view/85/the-importance-of-travelling-local-in-adventure-sports

http://www.muchbetteradventures.com
