Kayaking in February may not have been the ideal month to choose, but we were well-prepared thanks to the helpful information on Channel Islands Outfitter’s website, including to dress warmly for the hour-long boat ride to Santa Cruz and to wear a bathing suit and rash guard under their supplied (and warm) wetsuit.

When we arrived at Island Packers Ventura Harbor port, it was a bit foggy and as the boat pulled out of port, we spotted one huge Steller sea lion and a seal with her baby nesting on a buoy, followed by impressive flocks of birds skimming the sea – an exhilarating start to the memorable day. The sea was rocky and my excitement was expressed better by the group of middle-schoolers who screamed with joy each time we scooted over a wave. As we approached the Channel Islands, the sun came out, showcasing the remarkable, protruding rock structures that seem untouched by time: Channel Islands National Park. Island Packers makes stops at two places on Santa Cruz: Scorpion Anchorage, where we got off, and Prisoners Harbor.

Once we were given our gear and a detailed lesson on kayaking, our group of nine set off. As a first time kayaker, I have to admit to being nervous, but our guides, Matt and Johnny, helped us into the ocean and made sure each of us was comfortable. As mentioned previously, the water was rougher than ideal for kayaking, but even so, I found myself smiling to be on the ocean with the sun shining against an absolutely stunning island. “Right, left, right, left” encouraged my kayaking partner, as we navigated the ocean to each set of caves. How fun! The water was so blue and clear that we could see several feet down into the ocean. Who knew that seaweed was strong enough to “anchor” you for a few minutes to take in the surroundings….and somehow wasn't that slimy?!

Once back at the cove, we feasted on the huge sandwiches and homemade corn nuts and banana chips provided by the Channel Island Provisioners while marveling at the green hills we were soon to climb in one of the many hikes on the island. We chose a 2-mile loop to Cavern Point, one of the island peaks where we walked through fields of yellow mustard plants and purple flowers with magnificent coastal vistas. Okay, at this point we are feeling a world away from from the stresses of everyday life and could not be happier. Perhaps that explains the uncharacteristic response on the way down the trail loop: I joined a couple of my fellow hikers in a verse from the Sound of Music, belting out “The Hills are Alive…..” Because they were: beautiful and green and silent other than the sound of the wind and our voices.

Our day continued to go from highlight to highlight, because as we finished the trail loop through the campground on Santa Cruz (yes, you can camp there!), we saw one of the island foxes which live on six of the eight Channel Islands, but nowhere else in the world. The tiny creature paralleled our walk for a bit, allowing some photo ops, and then disappeared in the tall grass.

It’s hard to say what the highlight of the day was: the ocean journey, kayaking, the ocean views from the top of the island, the wildlife, or the brilliant green hills; but there is one thing for sure, it was a trip that will stay with me and I will definitely be back.

My 5 Favorite Places to Kayak & Paddle Board in Mainehttps://tripatini.com/profiles/blogs/my-favorite-places-to-kayak-and-paddle-board-in-maine2016-10-06T17:40:17.000Z2016-10-06T17:40:17.000ZRobert Walshhttps://tripatini.com/members/RobertWalsh

Maine is the outdoor haven of the northeastern USA. Between the beaches and the camping, there is no shortage of outdoor activities here for people to enjoy.

There's a reason that this is such a popular location in this part of the country. It's an idyllic location that offers the best of every world: old charming towns, stunning landscape, and great places for kayaking and paddling.

There are so many different places that you can choose from in this gorgeous state that picking only five places was a difficult task.

Damariscotta River

You can paddle and kayak your way through this gorgeous location, where you can paddle through islands and oyster farms. There are a couple of different routes here\ - one with calmer waters, while the other is for more adventurous thrill-seekers. If you are new to this area, ask locals where the best place to kayak around.

One particularly interesting location here to note is the Dodge Point Preserve. There is a beach, as well as trails that you can enjoy in this area. This place is not easy to get to, however, so you will need to pack in your paddle board or kayak, I would recommend an inflatable SUP, which you can easily carry in with a backpack.

St. John’s River

Here you are able to get as calm or as wild of a journey as you want while you are kayaking. The St Johns River is often considered to be the best kayaking and paddling area on this side of the country for this very reason. Some people enjoy the thrills from whitewater kayaking while others want a more peaceful and relaxing experience and each can go to different parts of the river to get these experiences. During this river adventure, you are going to take in some of the best that the Maine wilderness has to offer.

Acadia National Park

If sea kayaking or paddling is more your speed, this is one place that you absolutely must see. The kayaking here is good for both experienced and new kayakers, though people with less experience should take in a tour rather than explore on their own. This trip will let you see a side of this national park that you may not have seen before as you kayak by this stunning shoreline.

Scarborough Marsh

This is the largest salt marsh in the state, which means that it is worth checking out on its own merit. If you are someone who loves to take in nature, especially birds, this is the perfect location for you to visit.

This location is actually also a critical habitat for a wide variety of birds, including species like the egrets, glossy ibis and herons, just to name a few of the many majestic birds that you are able to find here. There are even tours that you can partake in here that may be very interesting to the nature lover.

Sebago Lake

Not as well-known as some other spots, Sebago Lake is truly a gem that offers amazing camping locations and water activities for visitors. The wildlife here is simply exquisite and you can get a glimpse of the charming sight know as Frye Island. The lake is around 45 square miles and is a calm little place to enjoy nature.

Kayaking in Costa Rica's mangroveshttps://tripatini.com/profiles/blogs/kayaking-in-costa-rica-s-mangroves2014-04-21T17:00:00.000Z2014-04-21T17:00:00.000ZShannon Farleyhttps://tripatini.com/members/ShannonFarley

One of my most favorite tours at Playa Nicuesa Rainforest Lodge in Costa Rica is to go kayaking in the mangrove estuary at the Esquinas River, and then snorkeling in Golfo Dulce.

There is a magic in peacefully gliding along in a kayak; the only sounds coming from small splashes of kayak paddles sliding through the water, the songs of birds, and the occasional explosion of noise from rainforest insects. Tangled mangrove roots stretch down into silty water like tentacles, while multicolored crabs skitter along the dank wood. Sunshine lights up lime green water reflecting dense green vegetation.

If you stay alert, you may spot the bumpy snout and eyes of a partly-submerged caiman or crocodile. You will always kayak with the current to make paddling easier, so depending on the tides depends on whether you start kayaking upstream or downstream. Besides kayaking in the main river, you will explore small tributaries amid the mangroves.

After an hour or more of kayaking, you will board the boat once again to travel back out into the Gulf to a prime snorkeling spot. Right off the coast, there are many small coral reefs housing masses of brightly colored tropical fish and other marine life. The Gulf water is warm, calm and usually crystal clear.

On the way back to Playa Nicuesa, watch for playful dolphins, sting rays and sea turtles in the water. Costa Rica counts close to 800 miles of ocean coastline between the Pacific and Caribbean coasts, along with hundreds of rivers and estuaries, and several lakes – all full of kayaking possibilities.

Kayaking is good exercise, and you can work on your tan at the same time! Oftentimes, kayaking trips include other activities like snorkeling, wildlife spotting or trail walking. You can easily find kayaking tours in Costa Rica for both experienced and inexperienced kayakers; they are great family outings.

Places to kayak include the canals of Tortuguero and the coral reefs in the Cahuita National Park on the Caribbean; Lake Arenal; Golfo Dulce in the south; the Nicoya Gulf in the Central Pacific; mangrove estuaries near Manuel Antonio, Tamarindo, and Drake Bay; the Pacific coastlines of Samara, Playa del Coco, the Papagayo Gulf, Jaco, and the Ballena Marine National Park; and tropical rivers like the Sarapiqui, Penas Blancas, Corobici, and Sierpe.

One of the best ways to enjoy the magnificent scenery of Lake Arenal and the Arenal Volcano is by kayak. Tours on Costa Rica’s largest lake usually use very stable double or single “sit-on-top” open kayaks.

For more of a challenge, try ocean kayaking along the coast. At Manuel Antonio, you will explore beautiful coves, beaches and tiny islets of the Manuel Antonio National Park; another excellent day trip is kayaking in the nearby mangrove estuary of Damas Island. In the Ballena Marine National Park, you may catch sight of resident dolphins or even a Humpback Whale; the sea caves are exciting to paddle through! Golfo Dulce is one of the most spectacular areas for kayaking, with its calm, glassy, blue-green waters shaded along the shore by overhanging palm trees, and full of marine life like dolphins, sea turtles, fish and even whales.

The Tortuguero National Park is another special place to kayak. The sense of peace and tranquility was simply overwhelming. You heard nothing but the soothing sounds of paddles gliding through water. Along the way, the local mountain monkey made an appearance – which only served to enhance the trip even more.

Once back on board, we were treated to a delicious seafood buffet of prawns, crab, calamari, spring rolls, fish with rice and cabbage as well as fruit for desert. Piles of luggage were stacked in the doorway, but I held tightly to my backpack. As a solo traveler making my way through Vietnam, I had yet to let someone else touch my bag, the essence of my livelihood halfway around the world.

Earlier that morning I had taken a hired car from Hanoi to the coast of Vietnam. This part of the country, known as Halong Bay, was rumored to be tacky and touristy, so I opted instead to head straight for the water.

In fact, most travelers come to Halong Bay for one thing: To tour the bay by junk. These pirate-looking ships generally hold anywhere from a single couple to several dozen people, depending on the boat and tour operator.

Cruises at Halong Bay, Vietnam
Of the nearly 2,000 islands in Halong Bay, only about 300 of them have names. These sheer-faced rocks, covered with luscious trees and foliage, rise out of nowhere in the sea. Apparently birds, snakes, and monkeys live on them, but I can’t imagine that much else does.

As the junk floated among the islands, I sat on the top deck; my legs dangling over the edge of the boat, watching the world recede behind us. The warm, humid air sat heavy on my shoulders, and the dark green of the islands reflected onto the rough surface of the water despite the overcast sky. I felt like we were cruising through a waterlogged version of Jurassic Park.

We piled into the day cruiser that was pulled alongside the junket. One of the boat hands steered the craft toward Công Ðâm. The village “chief” greeted us, poured lukewarm tea into a set of chipped mugs and answered our questions about his home. This, the second largest fishing village in the bay, is only inhabited by 163 people.

As we floated in boats paddled by women in the village, I watched daily life on the water. Dogs lounged on the porches; wet clothes hung from the eves above makeshift porches that surrounded colorful homes sitting atop big plastic barrels.

Fishing village in Halong Bay
Despite rain, we set out in kayaks the next morning. I’d been kayaking in calm, clear waters before, but the rough conditions and inclement weather made the paddling tough, despite the fact that I was sharing a boat with Ahn, our guide, who kayaked several times a week.

He muscled our boat between the outcroppings as I feigned my attempt to help power the boat. Several times we stopped the kayak, rain pouring down, waiting for the others to catch up.

The next morning, our final day in the bay, I awoke to a bright sun and clear sky. The emerald foliage of the outcroppings was painted a surprising shade of brilliant green, which reflected in the water like a flat mirror.

We hopped in the kayaks and paddled to a small island with a large cave. The opening on the island was heavily trafficked.

And so we moved through the cave, trying to guess Ahn’s made-up formations quickly so we could get back in the sun.

Source: volumeone
Praise from a jury of my peers!https://tripatini.com/profiles/blogs/praise-from-a-jury-of-my-peers2010-12-21T04:00:00.000Z2010-12-21T04:00:00.000ZLinda Ballouhttps://tripatini.com/members/LindaBallou

I am absolutely over the top with the response from the Vagablogging reviewer for Rolf Potts.

Linda Ballou’s Lost Angel Walkabout isn’t your standard collection of travel essays.

The Southern Hemisphere's tallest freestanding tower (328 metres), used for communications and also with a public observation deck and three eateries, is also home to a couple of thrill attractions. SkyWalk is a walkway around the outside of the tower with no handrail, 192m from the ground (don't worry, you're in a harness). Or you can choose SkyJump, plummeting downward at 85 kilometres per hour (then bouncing back up). A bit of adrenaline, anyone?
