Cancun/Riviera Maya

Cancun and the Riviera Maya (then the Costa Maya) coast, on the Yucatan Peninsula stretching three or so hours south to the Panama border have for some time now been among the world's most popular destinations because they offer a bevy of attractions appealing to families, including beautiful beaches; exciting adventure and ecotourism; and a wide, appealing menu of shopping, dining, and entertainment options. And for families in which mom and dad (and hey, maybe even their teenagers) are avid golfers, some 15 world-class courses add to the appeal. Two of the best:

El Tinto Cancun Country Club - Ten years old and designed by Nick Price, this 6,650-meter paspalum-grass course a 15-minute drive south of Cancun's hotel zone is 18 holes par 72 plus nine more holes par 27, and also has five lakes and 84 bunkers/sand traps. More stats: Back 6,802m, slope 137/rating 75.8; gold 6,501m slope ,133/rating 74.1; blue 6,207m slope, 126/rating 71.8; white 5,832m slope, 123/ rating 71; red (W) 5,135m.

Puerto Cancun - Conveniently located in an exclusive area of villas and shops between the hotel zone and the city of Cancun, these links (above) designed by Tom Wiskopf are also 18 holes par 72. Length: 6,662m. Difficulty rating: Men: 135/75.6, 128/73.4, 124/71.2 and 120/68.9. Women: 131/72.8 and 120/70.

Catalonia, Spain

Enjoying a temperate climate allowing year-round play, the nearly three dozen top-quality courses of Spain's northeastern autonomous community are especially notably for their picturesque settings and views, whether in the resort areas along the Costa Brava and Costa Daurada, up near the Pyrenees Mountains, or quite near Barcelona city. In addition to being beautiful, all these courses are cutting edge and environmentally friendly. Top choices include the Real Club de Golf el Prat, the Club de Golf Llavaneras, the Club de Golf Terramar (above, in the reknowned resort town Sitges), the Club de Golf d'Aro Mas Nou, and the Club de Golf Vallromanes (on whose grounds is a beautiful restored 18th-century mansion called Torre Tavernera, with an excellent restaurant serving Catalan and international cuisine).

Cyprus

The Greek southern ⅔ of this Mediterranean island is home to four links, Aphrodite Hills (above), Elea Estate, Minthis Hills, and Secret Valley - which often host golf tournaments - and the city of Paphos on its southwest coast (and according to ancient Greek mythology the birthplace of the goddess of love Aphrodite) makes a great base for both swinging a club with a panoply of lodging and dining at all price points. But it also offers many other pleasures for the whole fam, such as touring the medieval old town and ancient Hellenic archaeological sites, visiting wineries, and enjoying fantastic swimming and water sports at beaches like Coral Bay, Latchi, Vardas, and Vrisoudia. It's also an easy drive to other appealing island destinations like Lemesos, Lefkosia, and capital Larnaka. The climate is especially good for golfing from October to March.

Dominican Republic

Along with its fabled beaches, adventure/eco activities, and capital Santo Domingo with the Americas' oldest historic old town, the DR is a golfing powerhouse, with more than a hundred world-class links rated the best in the Caribbean and even the whole of Latin America. Many were designed by the world's top pros and architects, such as Robert Trent Jones Sr., Greg Norman, Jack Nicklaus, Pete Dye, Gary Player, Tom Fazio, and Nick Price, and in addition the country has been a stalwart on the PGA tour since the 1970s. You'll find fantastic options in virtually all the major resort areas, including Puerto Plata, Punta Cana/Bávaro, Juan Dolio, and La Romana. Three which especially stand out:

Teeth of the Dog - Perhaps Pete Dye's quintessential course, inaugurated in 1971 at Casa de Campo resort in La Romana on the south coast, has been rated the Caribbean's number-one course for more than a decade, and ranks in the top 30 worldwide. As you can see above, the setting and views are stunning, and these 18-hole, par 72 greens are challenging thanks to features like tricky traps, a devilish dogleg, and wind gusts from the sea.

Dye Fore - Also created by Dye at Casa de Campo, in 2005, par 72, seven kilometers long and 100 meters above the Chavon River, 13 of its 27 holes overlook the Caribbean as well as Altos de Chavón, a picturesque replica of a 16th-century Mediterranean village filled with shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues.

La Cana Golf Club - Punta Cana is a total winner for families thanks to its beaches, resorts, and myriad activities, and yet another Pete Dye masterpiece, is one of the Caribbean's courses, par 36 and with 27 holes - 14 with sea views and four right on the beach. Challenging but appropriate for all skill levels. For more great PC golfscapes, click here.

Hawaii

With more than 70 courses throughout six islands, Hawaii is golf heaven both because of its balmy weather, its challenging links with first-class club service, and in many cases its stunning settings, including beautiful mountains, deep blue Pacific Ocean, and occasionally a spectacular waterfall or two. Top spots include Oahu's Royal Hawaiian Golf Club, Hawaii Kai Golf Course, and Ewa Beach Golf Club, and Ko Olina Golf Club (top). And of course we don't need to tell you these islands are also a paradise for family travel with its beaches, adventure/ecotourism, entertainment options, and dining to appeal to all tastes and wallets.

Mauritius

You sure wouldn't expect this beautiful, mostly unspoiled African country out in the Indian Ocean as a golfing destination, but the sport has a long history here, reaching back to the 19th century; annually hosts world-class tournaments; and today is home to eight high-quality 18-hole greens and five with nine holes. Top choices include Four Seasons Resort Mauritius at Anahita, The Legend (aka Belle Mare), and Heritage Golf Club. Off the links, for families interested in beaches and ecotourism, this island is a virtual paradise.

cgm.pt

Porto, Portugal

Golfing is muito popular in this country, especially in its most popular region for holidaymakers, the Algarve in the south. But we also love this northern city, with several fine options from the ocean shore to mountain settings. The most venerable is the 18-hole, par-71 Oporto Golf Club next to the beach in the resort town of Espinho, a 20-minute drive from Porto; this is one of the oldest courses in the entire world, founded in 1890 by British port wine producers. Other excellent nearby choices include Quinto do Fojo, part of a beautiful walled property in Vila Nova da Gaia, right across the Douro River from Porto (though it's small, with just six holes); and nine-hole, 88-year-old Club de Golf Miramar (above) in the beach town of the same name just ten minutes north of Espinho, and featuring some tees atop sand dunes). Speaking of port wine, tours and tastings at the city's port wine houses - as well a half-hour drive east in the Douro wine country - will also appeal to mom and dad. And speaking of beaches, for the whole fam there are some swell strands along the nearby coast, not just at Espinho and Mirmamar but neighboring ones such as Matosinhos, Praia das Fuzelhas, and Praia da Granja in São Félix da Marinha.

South African Tourism

South Africa

Africa's southernmost country has a long and distinguished golf pedigree reaching back to the late 19th century - and for example, the South African Open Championship is one of the world's oldest, marking one century in 2023 - and the standards and service are excellent at its more than 100 courses, with varied, perfectly groomed lawns set agains mesmerizing African landscapes. Among the very highest rated are the venerable Durban Country Club (above, est. 1920), the 22-year-old, Gary Player-designed links at Fancourt Hotel & Country Club in George on the Western Cape, and the also venerable Humewood in Port Elizabeth on the Eastern Cape. Beyond all that, it goes without saying that South Africa - with sub-Saharan Africa's best developed tourism infrastructure, a boon for those traveling with kids - is a fantastic destination for families interested in safaris, with game reserves like Kruger National Park, as well as marvelous beaches; interesting cities (Cape Town should be on everyone's bucket list); world-class wine country such as Stellenbosch; and much more.

Resorts where the country’s gentry had been vacationing long before golf was part of the American sports landscape quickly aligned themselves with the noble game imported from Scotland in the late 1800s.

Golf was being played by 1892 at The Homestead, the classic American resort that grew up around the healing natural springs in the Virginia mountains. Three years later the game landed at the Bedford Springs resort in south-central Pennsylvania. Pinehurst, the American resort now most associated with golf, unveiled its first course in 1898. Once the ball was rolling – pun intended – there was no stopping it.

Today, golf intermingles with luxury at resorts across the country, and whether you’re traveling to the beach, the mountains or the heartland, you can find a luxury resort where you can escape the daily grind and enjoy a holistic spa, a relaxing soak in a mineral spring, a good wine list with a hearty cut of beef and, oh yes, a fine game of golf.

The Greenbriar

Since 1788, The Greenbrier in the West Virginia mountains has hosted the world’s dignitaries and America’s aristocrats. It is the standard by which golf resorts are measured. The Greenbrier hosted the 1979 Ryder Cup on its Greenbrier Course and now holds an annual PGA Tour event on its first course, built in 1914, the Old White TPC course. Old White was recently renovated to restore the characteristics – punch bowl greens, imaginative bunkering and random mounds in the rough that create artificial hazards – of original designer C.B. Macdonald. The resort’s third course, The Meadows Course, has been changed many times to accommodate growth at the resort and while it doesn’t have the smooth flow of the other 2, it is a very friendly course for higher handicaps. Still, But it is the resort’s vast amenities the resort offers that make it the best – the impeccable accommodations, the world-class spa, the extravagant dining and even a casino.

Pinehurst

The world recognizes Pinehurst Resort as home to the internationally acclaimed Pinehurst No. 2, which has hosted 2 of the last 14 U.S. Open championships. There are 7 more courses ranging from the newly renovated but still friendly No. 1 to the long and very difficult No. 4 to the Tom Fazio-designed No. 8, which shows the true geographic characteristics of the North Carolina Sandhills. The resort is far more than golf, offering 7 more courses and the majestic Carolina Hotel, which is now more than a century old yet retains the elegance of its old-world charm, as well as several other inns. After golf, lawn sports like croquet and lawn bowling are the most prevalent activity, although the spa has gained acclaim even though it is just a few years old.

The Lodge at Pebble Beach

The Pacific Ocean has carved a rugged series of cliffs that define the California coastline of the Monterey Peninsula. But both the ocean and the ruggedness ends there. The peninsula itself is all about luxury golf. The oceanfront Lodge at Pebble Beach, the flagship of 3 resorts along the peninsula’s famous 17-Mile Drive, is the epitome of golf luxury. World-famous Pebble Beach Golf Links, with its barrage of 9 dramatic ocean side holes, is just outside the door. Inside, the cuisine, spa, luxury accommodations and elegant shopping lend a modern flare to classic luxury.

The Broadmoor

This year’s U.S. Women’s Open will be played on the Broadmoor East Course, which was also the site of Jack Nicklaus’ 1959 U.S. Amateur victory. The resort in Colorado Springs is at 6,400 feet above sea level and includes the mammoth, 7,637-yard Mountain Course, designed by Jack Nicklaus, but it is the famous East Course , designed by Donald Ross, where The Broadmoor’s biggest championships are held. The West Course was designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., giving the resort courses by three of the games greatest designers. A few years ago, Nicklaus returned to the Broadmoor to design the resort’s third course, the mammoth 7,637-yard Mountain Course. The resort in Colorado Springs is 6,400 feet above sea level, but don’t worry, if the golf or the altitude is too much foryou, the Broadmoor is pure, classic luxury. The resort began as a hotel and casino in 1918, but through a succession of owners has become one of the classiest and most luxurious golf resorts in the country, being named a Forbes Five-Star hotel for 50 consecutive years.

The Ritz Carlton Golf Resort

The world’s most recognizable name in luxury hotels reaches into golf in Naples, FL. The resort in southwest Florida is home to the stunning Tiburón Golf Club, with two immaculate courses designed by Greg Norman. The courses, similar in style, feature the Scottish-style stacked-sod bunker walls, little traditional rough and plenty of crushed-shell (coquina) waste areas. The Mediterranean-style hotel has the traditional luxury amenities – fine dining, a world-class spa and luxury accommodations all wrapped up in a tropical beach environment. So whether you’re up for a beach vacation, a mountain vacation retreat orf something lakeside – the combination of luxury and golf isn't always accessible.

The American Club

As proof you can find luxury golf in all sorts of places these days, travel 60 minutes north of Milwaukee, WI, where the farmland suddenly gives way to what might be mistaken for Ireland. The American Club resort’s 36-hole Whistling Straits facility on the western shore of Lake Michigan serves a giant helping of Irish links golf, which on a windy day will be more than you can handle. But that’s ok, The resort, owned by Kohler Company – yes, the huge kitchen and bath fixture company – pampers its guests with an array of fine restaurants and the Kohler Waters Spa where a vast menu of treatments will rejuvenate your body and soul.

By Nick Kontis founder of the World Travel List

Stockton Seaview Hotel and Golf Club: The Perfect H.Q. For an Awesome Atlantic City Family Vacationhttps://tripatini.com/profiles/blogs/stockton-seaview-hotel-and-golf-club-the-perfect-h-q-for-an2013-10-09T18:00:00.000Z2013-10-09T18:00:00.000ZTravel Daddyhttps://tripatini.com/members/TravelDaddy

After school wrapped up in June, my family (me, my wife Sue, our 15 year-old son Eddie, and our 11-year-old daughter Lee) began scouting locations for our summer vacation.

We established three key criteria to follow in the choosing of our destination. It needed to...

1. Offer easy access to a combination of fun as well as relaxing activities.

2. Be a top-rated, well-established resort facility in a beautiful location.

3. Be situated within a three-hour drive of our northern New Jersey abode.

We took a look at Google Maps, approximated a three-hour wide perimeter around our hometown, and checked out the choices.

The Options

Crystal Springs Resort in Hamburg, NJ looked promising. It’s in a gorgeous country setting and the facilities looked great, with lots of activities to choose from. The only problem was that the majority of the offerings – especially the ones outdoors - were similar to what we had already experienced the summer before at Smugglers Notch. We were looking for something new and unique, and Crystal Springs, while an attractive choice, didn’t have enough of either to keep us or our kids engaged.

I then came across info about Stockton Seaview Hotel and Golf Club in Galloway, NJ. The property had great reviews, and it seemed to be a popular destination for vacationers and golfers.

Seaview was founded in 1914 by Philadelphia industrialist Clarence H. Geist as a luxurious country escape for the upper crust. Its facilities, which include 297 guest rooms and 39,500 square feet of modern conference center and special event space, sit on 670 wooded acres, and are only 8 miles (!) from Atlantic City attractions. Along with being home to two of New Jersey’s oldest and most prestigious 18-hole golf courses, Seaview also offers a 22-acre driving range, a fitness center, a game room, tennis and volleyball courts, basketball courts, a running trail, two pools (indoor and outdoor), and a satellite of a historic local art gallery, Noyes Museum, which features exhibits by area artists.

The more we learned about Seaview, the more appealing it was – so we came up with a plan. We’d use Seaview as a strategic base of operations from which we’d make daily (and possibly several daily) jaunts to activities in Atlantic City. This would give us the best of two worlds: the “ooh!” of A.C.’s energetic entertainment options and the “ahhh…” of Seaview’s lovely locale.

(As much as possible, we planned to take advantage of the many physical activities available at Seaview, as a way for Sue and I to grab some exercise and also to keep the kids moving.)

The Seaview Experience

After a very direct sub-two and a half hour drive, we pulled into a graceful, curved driveway that led to the entrance of Seaview’s main building. The structure was originally built in 1915, and its stately exterior and original early 20th century ambiance are still intact. Beautifully manicured lawns, a stylish dining terrace, and colorful foliage surround the building – along with a sleek 9-hole practice green and a mini-golf area for kids. Inside, the lobby is wide and immaculate with classic décor and plush furniture, and it’s a great place to sip, chat, or unwind.

We had two adjoining rooms in the main building, and they were just right. Each had a comfortable living room-type area, desk, and mammoth flat-screen TV. An elegant dressing alcove with a sink, magnifying mirror, blow dryer, and huge closet/storage space led to a magnificent, marble-floored bathroom with a separate bathtub and standalone multi-head shower stall. The beds looked comfortable and turned out to be outstanding: they gave each of us the deepest, most relaxing vacation sleeps that we ever had.

The service at Seaview was superb, specifically from the engineering department and housekeeping. When we had a question about how to operate our air conditioning system and also to report a stuck door, a technician was up at our room and solving the problem within minutes. Requests to housekeeping for extra pillows, plastic laundry bags, and other items were also delivered quickly.

(The team at the front desk was also really organized, pleasant, and eager to resolve any issue/question/dilemma that we had.)

An especially noteworthy aspect of the Seaview experience was the food: it wasn’t just appetizing, it was truly memorable. Seaview’s chefs grow many of the herbs that they use in their delectable creations, and much of the kitchen’s produce, meats, and fish are sourced from local growers/producers. The wholesome freshness shined through at all of our breakfasts, lunches, and dinners, with everything that we ordered looking and tasting delicious.

The many activities available to us at Seaview didn’t disappoint: the kids spent hours playing billiards in the game room and burning up energy in the two pristine pools; Eddie and I both got some runs in on a gorgeous and peaceful nature trail, which gracefully weaved through and around the Pines Golf Course; I worked up a sweat in the clean and well-equipped fitness room; and Eddie and I divvied up a couple of ball buckets on the driving range (we’re both sub-novices, so while our mutual flailage was unattractive, we had a blast).

Speaking of the links, Seaview happens to be a popular and highly respected golf resort: its courses were favorites of Presidents Warren G. Harding and Dwight Eisenhower, and have been graced by such greats as Ben Hogan and Sam Snead, who captured his first major there at the 1942 PGA Championship. We saw golfers aplenty during our stay, including guys who were taking breaks from corporate meetings at Seaview’s conference center as well as families from around the country whose kids were competing in the 2013 U.S. Kids Golf Open (hosted by Seaview). Along with their legacy course choices, Seaview also offers comprehensive golf lessons and family golf packages.

A.C. Access to the wide, clean beaches was FREE, and there were shower facilities along the boardwalk to wash off salty skin and sandy feet.

Our schedule through our week at Seaview included stops at a variety of family-oriented Atlantic City attractions, including:

ATTRACTION: The Steel Pier

WHAT IT IS: America’s oldest boardwalk amusement center.

WHY IT’S GREAT: First opened to the public in 1898, the historic Steel Pier should be the first stop on any visit to Atlantic City. Packed with arcade games, indulgent samplings of classic boardwalk delicacies, and rides with appeal to visitors ranging from toddlers to adults (including helicopter tours and the insane Slingshot thrill ride), Steel Pier offers families a ideal taste of the classic A.C. boardwalk experience.

ATTRACTION: James Candy Company factory tour

WHAT IT IS: A mouth-watering look at the production process behind one of America’s premier family-owned candy manufacturers.

WHY IT’S GREAT: For five generations, the brands of James Candy Company - which include Bayard’s Chocolate, Fralinger's Salt Water Taffy and James Candy - have been delighting sweet toothers of all ages across the U.S. and around the world. James Candy’s legacy offerings are crafted by experienced artisans, a number of whom have worked at the factory for dozens of years (the factory employs over 200 workers from the Atlantic City area). Many of the company’s original (and delectable) chocolate, taffy, fudge, and macaroon recipes that were devised at the beginning of the 20th century are still being used, as are a number of the machines that are used in the production processes. Levi Fox, an adjunct professor at Stockton College and Rutgers University, leads the James Candy factory tours during the summer, and manages to combine bonbons of history (American and regional), science, cooking, geography, business, and industry into his fun and fascinating presentation. The tour delights the brain and thrills the senses: the aromas on all four floors of the factory are mesmerizing, and the tastes are incredible (there are samples aplenty during and after the tour). Eddie, Lee, and I were blown away by this unforgettable experience, and the sugar rush afterwards was way cool.

ATTRACTION: Ripley’s Atlantic City Odditorium

WHAT IT IS: A museum featuring amazing relics from the journeys of world explorer Robert Ripley, along with a wide assortment bizarre, astounding, and amusing “oddities”.

WHY IT’S GREAT: The Ripley’s Odditorium is pure, straight-up fun. It includes strange artifacts that Ripley collected in his early 20th century adventures, multimedia presentations of unusual phenomena, brain teasers/quizzes, optical illusions, eerie exhibits, and a whole lot of surprises. The displays offer lots of history and fascinating facts for both kids and adults, and each of us had a great time taking it all in. Expect lots of conversations and questions to result from this entertaining and unusual tour.

ATTRACTION: Atlantic City Aquarium

WHAT IT IS: A small yet excellent collection of marine life displays and memorable interactive exhibits.

WHY IT’S GREAT: Located in the historic Gardner’s Basin district - a maritime park that offers concerts, artisan crafts and antiques, a farmer’s market, fishing charter boats and themed cruises, and rustic eateries - the modern and colorful A.C. Aquarium lets families get a close-up look at exotic aquatic creatures and local nautical history. The little ones will be wowed when a diver gets in a 25,000 gallon “Fish of the Mid-Atlantic” tank to feed black drums, sea bass, cownose rays, smooth dogfish sharks, a loggerhead sea turtle, and more - and everyone will LOVE the 900 gallon touch tank of baby stingrays, which enjoy getting petted and actually pop their heads out of the water to say hello!

ATTRACTION: Blue Man Group at Caesars Hotel & Casino

WHAT IT IS: A multimedia stage show featuring music, comedy, and and dazzling technology.

WHY IT’S GREAT: Sue and I had seen Blue Man Group’s original stage show in New York in the early 90s, and it was fantastic. The most recent version of their performance combines slapstick, zany gross outs, boisterous percussion, rock n’ roll energy, social commentary, and cutting edge technological effects - all rolled into a celebratory party vibe. The otherwordly Blue Men take the crowd on a joyous, unpredictable trip that’s ideal for both adults and kids. Unsuspecting audience members are selected by the Blue Men throughout the show to be a part of their onstage exploits, and if you’re lucky enough to be a victim - I mean, participant - you should absolutely leap at the chance to join the fun.

So what were the takeaways from our week long jaunt to Seaview and Atlantic City?

1. Atlantic City offers a diverse selection of fun, unique, and affordable family-friendly activities and attractions. We could have stayed in the area for another entire week and still not gotten to many additional A.C. experiences that we would have enjoyed.

2. Stockton Seaview Hotel and Golf Club is an exceptional escape for families (or couples) looking for a fall getaway, spring retreat, or summer vacation, with plenty of activities to satisfy those seeking activity or relaxation.

3. Seaview is an ideal home base for area visitors who want to enjoy all the pizzazz that A.C. has to offer, but also want a break from the city’s high energy vibe.

To express our collective satisfaction with our Seaview/Atlantic City vacay using gratuitous casino lingo, the trip wasn’t exactly a blind bet - thanks to the wildcard of many positive online reviews, we knew that our roll of the dice would yield some big payouts. What we didn’t realize was how much of a winning streak we’d be on: our top shelf Seaview experience made us feel like true MVGs, and our daily visits to the action of “America’s Favorite Playground” delivered a royal flush of memories, excitement, and fun.

Costa Rica Is Ace Destination for World-Class Golfhttps://tripatini.com/profiles/blogs/costa-rica-is-ace-destination-for-world-class-golf2013-01-04T18:00:00.000Z2013-01-04T18:00:00.000ZShannon Farleyhttps://tripatini.com/members/ShannonFarley

By Shannon Farley

Costa Rica’s fabulous year-round sunshine, balmy weather and remarkable championship golf courses are fast earning the country the reputation as an “ace” place for world-class golf.

The best part? Located just a few hours’ flight away from North America, Costa Rica’s weather is best when all points north are frozen in winter’s icy grip. Missing the long, verdant stretch of a fairway in December? This tiny Central American nation’s endless summer of sunshine just gets blazing in December and lasts through April. Even in rainy season (May to November), most mornings are cloud-free and sunny to early or mid-afternoon. With sunrise at about 5:00 am, you have plenty of time for a round of 18 holes.

Costa Rica’s golf courses, spread across the country mostly along the Pacific Coast and in the Central Valley, all have their unique distinguishing features. Blue ocean, sandy beach, lush vegetation, rolling hills, woods, lakes, mountains … and where else might you spot monkeys, toucans, parrots and other tropical wildlife while teeing up? A friend of mine playing on a well-known Central Pacific course once had his ball stolen off the green by an iguana thinking it was an egg!

Costa Rica travel experts Team CRT propose four fetching golf vacation packages playing Costa Rica’s top golf courses.
