It is true, here there is something to see: powerful waterfalls, active volcanoes, geysers (springs, periodically throwing out hot thermal water and steam, one of the manifestations of vulcanism), giant glaciers. Well, the natural beauty of the island is supplemented with the existence of various animals and birds.

Let’s have a closer look at the various fauna of Iceland. One can see arctic foxes, reindeer, mink and mouse live in their natural habitats. And, of course sheep! Sheep in Iceland are two times mor numerous than the local inhabitants. There are indigenous breed of sheep famous for their very long hair and a good character. Hardy sheep graze freely in mountain pastures during the summer. Cattle are rather small, but with a wide range of colors.

Among the wild animals in Iceland there are also found the Arctic fox, who lived here before settling people, while many other mammals came with people.

Icelandic sheep dogs (shepherds) are the only natural breed of dogs in Iceland, and one of the oldest breeds in the world. The ancestors of these dogs were brought to Iceland by the Vikings, who first arrived in 874 AD. Soon these animals spread throughout the country and began to develop separately from other breeds of dogs on this isolated island. Icelandic sheep-dog is a rare breed, around the world, there are only about 3,300 dogs.

One more very important animal in Iceland is the horse. Icelandic horses do a lot of work, especially in small farms. They transport hay, building materials, fertilizers. Most of the horses are short, very hardy ponies. They are a favorite topic of Icelandic painting. Such is the small world of land animals in Iceland.

Nevertheless, this shortcoming is more than compensated by the number of other animals – birds make up most of the fauna of Iceland.

Here you can see about 80 species of birds – Aider duck, swan, falcon, ptarmigan, tern, and imposing gannet, etc. However, few can compare with the puffin in terms of numbers: 5 - 6 million birds of this kind, that are larger than any other Icelandic species. Plover is another of the most common bird species.

Iceland is a paradise for lovers of birdwatching. Basically, a lot of travelers come here every year in order to watch deadlocks. There are three main places to observe them: on the western fjords are the Latrabjarg rocks, in the east it is the cape near the town of Borgarfjordur, in the south – the Dirholaey reserve. You will also have an opportunity to watch these amazing birds if you come at one of these places.

It would be not fair if we miss the marine world. In the lakes there is trout, and in the rivers – salmon. In coastal waters, there are two kinds of seals and several species of whales. There are places for spawning cod, sea bass, haddock, halibut and shrimp. On the coast, you can suddenly meet a gray fur seal.

For travelling around the Iceland, you cannot do without transport – use car rental in Reykjavik. If you are going to explore the depths of nature and watch the animals and birds, the best option is an SUV. At Reykjavik airport, you can choose Toyota Landcruiser, Hyundai Santa Fe, Hyundai Tuscon, Suzuki Jimny, Kia Sportage, Toyota Rav4 and many others.

Have a good trip! I ran out of toothpaste.

Not life changing in itself, I agree, but it was the first in a series of interesting events that day which included having lasagne for supper (my favourite) and being charged by a lion.

Perhaps I should say a bit more about the lion thing. At approximately 06:00 that morning, a small group of us under the expert guidance of Chantelle chanced upon some large and very fresh lion tracks close to the Motloutse River just north of the east west ridge.

Chantelle is the other half of the Brian/Chantelle combo that are the instructors at the EcoTraining camp in Mashatu. She has a black belt in Taekwando and has had more lion encounters than I’ve had parking tickets, no mean achievement since I live in central London!

Brian is a quiet and unassuming man who likes to take pictures of wild flowers. He’s also Taekwando black belt and holds a diploma in conservation management. Out here they are definitely the team you’d want on your side in a crisis.

Back to the lion…

Chantelle was lead, Graham at backup and Kelly, Kyle and I made up the rear.

A Large and Dangerous Male

We were all very excited to find the tracks and keen to follow them to their source. That this source was undoubtedly a large and extremely dangerous male lion that certainly wouldn’t appreciate our attention didn’t really impress itself upon me at the time.

Nevertheless, after about half an hour of tracking through the fever berry croton thicket, we heard the unmistakable heavy breathing of a sleeping lion somewhere very close by. We immediately went into silent mode and crept towards the sound. Emerging from the thicket at the foot of a gentle but barren slope, we spotted a large thorn bush directly ahead of us about 15 metres away on the top of the hill.

Suddenly a large male lion appeared to the left of the bush. Irritated at having been woken from his sleep, he emitted a bloodcurdling growl and began to snarl menacingly.

And then an absolutely text book response from Chantelle when she shouted “Lion! Stand still!” and chambered a round into her .458 rifle. “Get behind me. Hey! Hey! Hey!”

She shouted, the lion growled, she shouted, the lion growled. Trading insults with an angry lion at less than 20 metres requires some nerve, but as intended, the lion was distracted by a continuing stream of some very colourful language.

We did exactly what we were told without question. My heart was pounding in my mouth and my breakfast was pressing against my trousers. But by now we were on automatic.

And then the Lion Charged...

Meanwhile, the lion, who hadn’t taken kindly to all this confusion, mock charged Chantelle, stopping only 10 metres from her before going back up the hill and charging again. Unquestionably the most unnerving thing about the mock charge is that you can’t differentiate from a real charge until the actual mock bit, by which time the lion is only a few metres away from you!

But Chantelle held her nerve and I was comforted by the fact that if her rifle jammed, she could probably kick it to death.

We all reversed back into the thicket and happily the lion didn’t follow us. After about 30-40 metres we turned around and headed away as quickly as possible. Only when we felt we’d gone far enough did we stop, ecstatically shouting and high-fiving.

Chantelle aside, it had been the biggest adrenalin rush of our lives.

Back to the toothpaste – so I reached into my wash bag and proceeded to squeeze shaving foam onto my brush…

Article by Philip Dumas (One year Student at EcoTraining)

www.ecotraining.co.za

Queensland's Australia Zoohttps://tripatini.com/profiles/blogs/australia-zoo2014-04-30T15:21:54.000Z2014-04-30T15:21:54.000ZKeith Kelletthttps://tripatini.com/members/KeithKellett

Australia Zoo was established in 1970 by Robert Irwin, as the ‘Beerwah Reptile and Fauna Park’, on the grounds of a former macadamia nut farm. From an early age, his son, Steve, helped his father with the animals, both looking after them, and rescuing and relocating them.

As most people know, Steve became a familiar face all around the world with his excellent TV series ‘Crocodile Hunter’. Through this programme, viewers became very familiar with Australia Zoo, as it had been renamed. And, of course, the infectious grin, the khakis, a haircut that should have got his barber arrested and, above all, a bubbling enthusiasm and passion made Steve instantly recognisable just about anywhere.

Sadly, Steve was killed in an accident in 2006, but the work of Australia Zoo, headed by Terri, his widow, ably assisted by his children, Bindi and Robert and his best friend, Wes Mannion, goes on.

I visited Australia Zoo recently, and found it to be one of the very few places that live up to my expectations in every way. It conveys the environmental message extremely well, as did Steve, in his lifetime. If there's any fault to be found at all, I think maybe the zoo should be fully focussed on indigenous wildlife. There's plenty of emphasis on it here, though; Tasmanian Devils, cassowaries and, of course ... crocodiles.

There's an interesting exhibit of photos and artifacts called 'The Steve Irwin Story', and the whole presentation makes you think that he's still there.

Maybe, in a way, he is … at any moment, I expected a figure in khaki to bounce around the corner holding something deadly by the tail, and uttering one of his catch phrases:

‘Crikey! Cop a look at this little beauty!’

They have a daily show at the Crocoseum ... that’s an arena, sponsored by Discovery Channel’s Animal Planet, who made the ‘Crocodile Hunter’ programmes, where they display some of their animals. Not only crocodiles, but snakes and different kinds of birds are paraded so that people can look at them other than through cage bars.

Elsewhere in the zoo, it's a pity the tigers and the Komodo Dragon were behind glass, as the reflections were difficult to deal with when photographing them. But, I suppose it's necessary for safety.

To be fair, it’s only the really dangerous animals, like the Fierce Snake, that are kept in cages. When it’s appropriate, animals are kept in pens instead. In some cases, it’s even possible to enter the enclosure, and walk around among the animals. And, around almost every corner, there’s a keeper to demonstrate something to you.

What we didn’t see was the echidna … I suppose it was hiding under a log, or something? But they did say what time it would be fed, and, if we came around that time (sadly, we couldn’t) we’d be much more likely to see him. But, I did see and photograph one in the wild, taken on Kangaroo Island five years ago. So, it wasn’t too much of a disappointment.

Sri Lanka Elephant Orphanagehttps://tripatini.com/profiles/blogs/sri-lanka-elephant-orphanage2014-04-07T03:09:27.000Z2014-04-07T03:09:27.000ZForrest Walkerhttps://tripatini.com/members/ForrestWalker

Admit it. It is tough to visualize an elephant orphanage. Visions of elephants in shorts like Oliver Twist asking “please sir may I have another” were short lived in my great expectations, however they were not replaced with anything very clear.

Originally set up by the government to care for abandoned or orphaned elephants it has now turned into a major tourist attraction and seems to be the economic cornerstone of a small village outside of Kandy named Pinnewala.

It has its critics. The critics are concerned that it has turned into a breeding ground as much as an orphanage, something Oliver Twist never had to concern himself with I am sure. The mahouts(elephant handlers) take really good care of them and they are fed all they can eat without having to ask for another.
