In the heart of the Adriatic Sea, Hvar is a true paradise that captivates visitors with its stunning landscapes, fascinating history, vibrant nightlife, and gourmet cuisine. According to relevant Forbes, Hvar is the first on the list of "European Island Destinations To Visit This Year."

"Chic Hvar in the Adriatic Sea came in at 9th place in the CNTraveler Readers' Choice Awards 2023 for the Best European Islands, and it's easy to see why. Hvar is best suited for travellers looking to find something for everyone—great restaurants and nightlife that cater to the glitzy superyacht crowd, it has spas and wellness centres for anyone looking to recharge, and quieter types can head inland on this tiny island (population around 11,000) to explore the rustic vineyards and lavender fields." - Alex Ledsom Forbes.

When it comes to Croatian islands, many people's minds instantly wander to Hvar - the Adriatic jewel of the Split archipelago.

With its rich history dating back to ancient times, monumental architectural achievements from the Venetian era, and stunning beaches, Hvar stands out as one of the top destinations in Split-Dalmatia County.

The island boasts two significant hubs: the town of Hvar and Stari Grad. Two smaller tourist gems are Jelsa and Vrboska. Let's not forget Sućuraj, a quaint fishing village on the island's eastern tip.

Stari Grad:

Stari Grad on Hvar is known as the oldest settlement on the island, founded in 385 BC as the Roman city of Pharos. Just as it was in Roman times, Stari Grad remains the most urbanized area of Hvar today. It's packed with intriguing cultural attractions and boasts clean seas and beautiful beaches, making it an ideal summer getaway for locals and tourists.

Stari Grad is the main ferry port on Hvar, connecting it to the mainland via the Split-Stari Grad ferry route.

Things to Do in Stari Grad:

Stari Grad left a lasting impression on me as a charming and well-kept destination. It's a relief that even during peak season, this place is more relaxed than other popular spots like Hvar town. Therefore, visitors seeking a peaceful vacation spot can choose Stari Grad. Of course, if you stay in Stari Grad for a few days, a day trip to Hvar town is a fantastic idea.

As I strolled toward Stari Grad, the first exciting attraction I noticed was the Šime Ljubić Palace, located on the southern side of town, near the coast. Another highlight was the Castle of Petar Hektorović, one of Croatia's greatest writers. In the 16th century, this building was a fortress to defend against Turkish invasions.

Simultaneously, the Church of St. Nicholas caught my eye—a small Renaissance building built on the remains of an older Romanesque church. Inside, visitors can admire intriguing artworks like the main altar and paintings. The most monumental building in town is the Church of St. Stephen, also built in the Renaissance style.

Hvar Town:

Hvar Town is the island's top destination. During the summer, this place transforms into a haven for glamorous celebrities; Michael Jordan was recently spotted here. With glamour comes high prices—the centre of Hvar Town ranks among Croatia's priciest tourist destinations in the summer. Hence, many visitors prefer to visit outside the peak tourist season for a more budget-friendly experience.

Things to Do in Hvar Town:

As soon as I stepped off the bus in Hvar Town, I noticed two monumental and impressive buildings. The first was the Španjola Fortress, located in the upper part of town, and the second was the Cathedral of St. Stephen, just a hundred meters from the bus station.

While the current cathedral building dates back to the Baroque period, it's known to have been constructed in earlier eras. Visitors can explore numerous fascinating artworks inside the cathedral, including altars, statues, and paintings. Entry to the cathedral is free.

After touring the cathedral, I strolled along the waterfront promenade. The atmosphere was fantastic. Every few hundred meters, I came across a beach—some well-manicured. In contrast, others remained in their natural rocky state, shaped by the forces of nature and sea waves. Nearby, I spotted several luxury hotels.

Visiting Španjola Fortress:

Upon returning to the town centre, I visited one of its main attractions, Španjola Fortress. It took me about twenty minutes to walk uphill to reach the fortress. I recommend wearing sneakers while hiking to the fortress for added comfort. Along the way, I passed through a beautiful Mediterranean park filled with plants typical of the region. As I returned to town, I explored several other monumental buildings. The Church of St. Spirit caught my attention—a Renaissance-style building. Unfortunately, the summer residence of the renowned Croatian poet Hanibal Lucić was closed to visitors.

Boat Tours Form Split to Hvar

To get to the island of Hvar, you can take exclusive private tours from Split to Hvar or a day boat excursion like the famous Blue Cave And Five Islands, where you'll enjoy breathtaking views of the Adriatic Sea and prepare for an unforgettable adventure.

Once you set foot on the island, you'll be struck by its old-world charm. With its cobblestone streets and Venetian-inspired architecture, the town of Hvar takes you back in time to a bygone era. You'll discover hidden churches, charming squares, and bustling marketplaces as you explore the narrow streets. Every nook and cranny of Hvar is picture-perfect, so bring your camera along!

Town vibrant nightlife

In addition to its fascinating history and stunning architecture, Hvar is also known for its vibrant nightlife. The town comes alive after dark, with stylish beach bars and lively nightclubs that make it a partygoer's paradise. Whether you want to dance the night away or relax with a cocktail, Hvar has something for everyone.

Hvar is also a must-visit destination for foodies. With its fantastic gastronomy scene, the island offers flavours that will tantalize your taste buds. Indulge in fresh seafood specialities at one of the seaside restaurants, or go wine tasting at a nearby vineyard. Hvar's cuisine is among the best in the world, thanks to the island's fertile soil and pristine waters.

Explore its diverse landscapes to make the most of your time in Hvar. This island has it all, from stunning beaches to verdant vineyards. Take a day trip to the Pakleni Islands, a divine archipelago just off the coast of Hvar, which boasts beautiful bays and crystal-clear turquoise waters. Hike up to the Fortress of Hvar for spectacular panoramic views of the town and neighbouring islands.

Experience the Vibrant Nightlife of Hvar Town

When it comes to nightlife on the island of Hvar, the spotlight undoubtedly falls on Hvar Town, which has become a city that never sleeps - at least from June to September. There's a wide selection of places to go out. Still, you're looking for a quieter atmosphere or prefer fewer crowds. In that case, Jelsa is an ideal alternative (with several cafes and restaurants). Stari Grad and Vrboska are more modest settlements than other places on the island.

During the summer, the nightlife of Hvar Town is one of the liveliest on the Adriatic coast. The city exudes a unique atmosphere, and there's always something happening. The fun lasts until the early morning hours, and guests can visit numerous events, restaurants, taverns, clubs, and more.

As the sea and air temperatures peak and the port becomes crowded with numerous boats, Hvar Town becomes one of the most sought-after destinations for young people looking for entertainment.

However, the atmosphere of the city changes from month to month, along with the different structures and ages of the visitors, making Hvar enjoyable to visit in various periods.

Excluding July and August (when the city sees the most visitors), the buzz on the streets is noticeable as early as May. It lasts until mid-October, allowing plenty of time for quieter city tours and enjoying the beaches without overcrowding. This time is ideal for visitors who are less concerned about vibrant nightlife and are more interested in leisurely strolls, sipping coffee, enjoying the gastronomic offerings, and soaking in the city's ambience. July and August are for those who love crowded streets, restaurants, beaches, and parties until the early hours.

The city's popularity among the younger population has undoubtedly increased thanks to the famous club "Carpe Diem." However, there are other bars and clubs in Hvar Town that you should definitely visit during your stay.

"Caffeine" or "Loco Bar" are ideal places for a morning cup of coffee and reading newspapers or books. After coffee, take one of the small taxi boats to the nearby Paklinski Islands, where you'll find a spot on one of the small beaches and enjoy the sun and swimming.

Carpe Diem Beach Bar: Here, you'll meet young people with whom you'll dance to the rhythm of Latin music at the famous "after-beach party" at "Carpe Diem Beach" (owned by the same team as "Carpe Diem" in Hvar Town). When you return to Hvar Town, the evening gathering is in one of the many bars, such as "Archie's Bar" or "Atelier."

If you're up for a louder and more vibrant night out, don't miss a visit to "Kiva," and later, don't forget about the best cocktail bar "Carpe Diem." A rich and diverse experience should end at the club "Veneranda," with the most beautiful sunrise view.

Carpe Diem: A perfectly designed place with an unforgettable atmosphere. Choose from a rich selection of cocktails and enjoy on a large terrace adorned with greenery at sunset and moonlight.

Carpe Diem Beach: A summer beach club in the bay of Stipanska, open during July and August, accessible by taxi boats from Hvar. Enjoy tropical cocktails and light food, play beach volleyball, and relax in the shade of pine trees with a view of the pool and the beautiful sea.

Veneranda: The Veneranda bar is located within the walls of the former monastery, with a small pool and a dance floor. Here, you'll listen to electronic music and be amazed by the view from the terrace at an unforgettable sunrise.

Hula Hula: A 15-minute walk west of the city centre, on the coast between the hotels "Amfora" and "Podstine," you'll find this rustic wooden beach bar. Enjoy the beautiful sunset view and chill-out music.

In conclusion of my visit:

After exploring Stari Grad and Hvar Town, I'm confident I'm impressed by these places and the island. It's clear why Hvar is considered the most attractive island in Croatian tourism and the world. Avoid the peak season when these places are crowded, and instead, try to organize your visit during the offseason to fully enjoy the island's beauty.

Hvar is a vacation destination that offers a unique blend of history, exciting nightlife, delicious cuisine, and breathtaking scenery. Hvar has something for everyone, from the charming old town to the lively nightclubs. Embark on a private tour from Split to Hvar or a day boat excursion to Blue Cave And Five Islands and discover a world of delights that will leave you spellbound. Safe travels!

The world´s second largest religion, Islam, is practiced by an estimated 1.8 billion people on every continent, and an estimated 3.6 million mosques worldwide, ranging from the humble, workaday and even primitve to the spectacular indeed. Countries with the most mosques include (believe it or not) Bangladesh, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Iran, Morocco, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia (which is after all the religion´s birthplace), Turkey, and Yemen. Known in Arabic as a masjid, this is where Muslims gather to pray the salah, and the world´s most beautiful are more than temples but rise to the level of architectural marvels appreciated by people of all faiths and even no faith. And here we offer our top ten, a mix of old and new:

Al-Haram - Makkah, Saudi Arabia

Probably the world´s most famous mosque (top) - also known as the Sacred Mosque and the Great Mosque of Mecca - is mentioned in the Quran as the first building ever built to worship Allah, started in the 7th century during the lifetime of the Prophet Muhammed. Attracting millions of Muslims every year to perform their Hajj or Umrah pilgrimages - including circling the cubelike black-stone building in its centre, called the Kaaba - the Masjid al-Haram is also the world's largest mosque complex (fully 35.6 hectares/88 acres in size) and can hold a staggering 2.5 million.

Wikiemirati

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque - Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

From ancient to recent (inaugurated in 1997), the UAE's largest mosque (12ha/30 ac., with room for more than 40,000 worshippers) is also without a doubt one of the most beautiful in the world. Named after the Emirates' founder, it has 82 white domes, and its interior features gorgeous hand-knotted carpets; numerous chandeliers covered in Swarovski crystals; 1096 columns made out of amethyst and jasper; and a pool that reflects those columns beautfully, especially at night.

Zen zeee

Hagia Sophia - Istanbul, Turkey

Its current iteration, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was built in 537 as the cathedral of Constantinople under the Byzantine emperor Justinian I, Hagia Sophia (Greek for "Holy Wisdom") was turned into a mosque by the Ottomans when they conquered the city 1453 and remained one until 1935, when it became a museum. The vast interior can hold up to 4,000 and among other elements features 107 massive columns; huge wooden roundels with Arabic calligraphy, added during a 19th-century renovation, as well as gorgeous Byzantine Christian mosaics, which were obviously allowed to remain.

Moiz Ismaili

Wazir Khan - Lahore, Pakistan

Located in the historic core of Pakistan's second-largest city and named for the grand vizier of the Mughal Empire who commissioned it, Wazi Khan was built during the 17th-century reign of Emperor Shah Jahan (who was also responsible for India's Taj Mahal) and is famed for its intricate tilework and elaborate frescoes.

VahiD ST66

Nasir-al-Mulk - Shiraz, Iran

Also known as the Pink Mosque because of all the exterior tiles of that color - set off by a beautiful rectangular pool surrounded by flowering plants - this one of the loveliest examples of Islamic architecture in the world because of its stunning stained glass and the interplay of light and colors they create. It was commissioned by Mirza Hasan Ali Nasir, a prominent local aristocrat of the then ruling Qajar dynasty, and completed in 1888.

rawpixel

Sultan Ahmed - Istanbul, Turkey

This city's other best known mosque, popularly known as the Blue Mosque because of the more than 21,000 blue-and-white Iznik tiles used inside, was completed in 1617 right across from Hagia Sophia. Some people think that this imposing edifice, with its six tall, fluted minarets and five domes, was the last great mosque built during the classical period.

Dans

Islamic Centre - Rijeka, Croatia

But there was one challenge: the Cave's natural entrance was submerged below sea level, making it accessible only by diving.

Driven by a passion for uncovering treasures hidden beneath the surface, Baron Ransonnet devised a revolutionary plan. He proposed the construction of a man-made opening, allowing small boats to enter the majestic realm of the Blue Cave. In 1884, through the power of dynamite, a small entryway measuring 2.5 meters wide and 1.5 meters high was created.

Exclusive Private Boat Tour From Split is Top Choice

Today, thanks to the Baron's visionary idea, visitors from all over the world can experience the wonders of the Blue Cave.
That mid-winter beach holiday is important for many people. In the midst of grey clouds, cold temperatures and the daily grind, an escape to warm sun and fun sounds very appealing. So, book yourself in for a mid-winter break at one of these amazing destinations that offer more than just a beach.

An Bang Beach, Hoi An, Vietnam

This stretch of beach (top) is endangered, as it is being progressively eaten away by the sea. However, it has small villas dotted along the beach with umbrellas and loungers, warm easily swimmable water, and loads of sun. It’s also close to Hoi An , so you can hire bikes and head into the city during the day if you’re bored of relaxing on the beach. The locals frequent the beach too, and in the evening the local kids come to play while their mothers watch, gossiping on the shore. A beautiful family friendly destination with great food from the shacks on the beach or some of the local ladies cook food in their home and deliver it to you on your lounger.

Goa, India

The beaches in this southwestern Indian state are pretty amazing, and you can choose what style suits you. The north beaches are great for partying at night with nightclubs and loads of beach dining options. The ones in the south are more peaceful - try Palolem. If you like turtles, Oliver Ridley Turtles hatch on Galgibag or Agonda beaches in the south, or Morjim, Mandrema and Ashvem in the north. Goa beaches have great seafood, loads of friendly stray dogs, wandering cows and plenty of locals. In the nearby town, there’s plenty of history to soak up too, with old churches, ruins and loads of local culture which is heavily Portuguese influenced.

Croatia

With more than 1,000 islands, there are beaches galore to choose from. The water is crystal clear, often with trees and forest right up to the water line (it's an ideal destination for a relaxing cruise). Some have white sand, while most have small pebbles and stones. This is because of the karst-heavy landscape (which gives you lots of cliffs to jump off into the water). Of course, there is also plenty to explore in the area, with Split and Dubrovnik set along the coast.

Seagrass Bay, Laucala Island, Fiji

Laucala Island Resort Tis an exclusive private island, a 50-minute flight from Nadi, completely isolated from the "real world." There is tropical jungle which you can trek through, and an amazing amount of bird and marine life. There are watersports, golf and horseback riding, diving and snorkelling… but this is a once in a lifetime experience that you’ll need to save for.

Greece

Some of Greece'shundreds of inhabited islands might be reaching saturation point for tourists, but there’s good reason for the crowds. Psarou Beach on Mykonos has loads of restaurants to choose from (you’ll want to make reservations) and a picturesque beach to laze on. Elafonísi on Crete is busy in the high season, but it’s home to hundreds of rare plants and amazing rock formations.

Zanzibar

With miles of white sand beaches and clear water, this Tanzania island offers a beach experience that very few know about. There’s incredible snorkelling and diving at many locations and a whole lot of opportunity to lie around in the sun. The best part is that there’s also lots of explore in the area, such a Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park or Changuu and its giant tortoises.

Pink Sand Beach, Bahamas

Pink due to the microscopic coral insects that have created the sand, Pink Sand Beach on Harbour Island is absolutely beautiful. There is snorkelling, swimming, and loads of relaxation to be had. Just don’t go expecting a bright pink beach- it’s a pleasantly pink tint, not a fluorescent spectacle.

Maho Beach, Saint Martin

Maybe not the most relaxing beach on the world, it’s still certainly got the "X factor." As it's located next to the Princess Juliana International Airport, if you love planespotting almost nowhere on earth will get you this close - just 30 meters. Do be careful though, as the jet blast can launch you into the sea unexpectedly and this has resulted in injury and death to other tourists. The beach's waters are barren of any living things due to jet blast erosion, so you’re only there for windsurfing, skimboarding, and being blasted by jet airplanes.

Rottnest Island, Perth, Australia

While Oz has more than its fair share of beautiful beaches, Rottnest Island - a short ferry ride from Perth - boasts something — or rather "someone" — a bit unique. Head over with a picnic and grab a push bike to start your journey. Head around the coastal road until you find a beach you like- it won’t take long, with white sandy beaches and sparkling warm blue waters. Before you get there, it’s almost guaranteed you’ll meet the inhabitants of the island - quokkas. These small fluffy marsupials are friendly and inquisitive and are famous for their "smiles." While you are not allowed to feed or pet them, they will still come and meet you and brighten up your day.

Varadero, Cuba

With extra sanctions being placed on travel, Americans in particular might have to do some fancier footwork to get here, but it’s quite doable - and quite worth it. These beaches have caves, 31 species of birds and 24 species of reptiles, and loads of gorgeous virgin cays. With 20 km of white sands and a population of around 20,000, it’s all about tourism, so you know you’ll have an amazing time.

I recently visited Pula for three days, taking in its top sights and feeling its beauty. If you're interested in rich culture/history as well as leisure pursuits, the best time to visit is from April to October (and to build a better, customized experience, try the TripHobo trip planner). Its long, rich history dates back more than 2,000 years, and among its major attraction are monuments built after Istria became part of the Roman Empire in 177 BCE, while others are legacies from the Venetian Republic and the Habsburg Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Silverije

Pula's Most Outstanding Attractions

The Roman Arena

Pictured at top, one of the world's best preserved Roman amphitheaters (in part because it was maintained during the Middle Ages as a venue for tournaments) is three stories high, was built of limetstone between 27 BCE and 68 CE, and could accommodate up to 20,000 spectators. Among the fascinating details visitors can still see are vast water cisterns and underground passages used by gladiators. These days it also hosts performances and sporting events.

The Pula Forum

The old town's main square dates back to Roman times, and includes landmarks from various historical eras such as the Roman Temple of Augustus and the Gothic/Renaissance/Baroque Communal Palace, built in 1296.

Formidable Forts

Built during Austro-Hungarian rule from the early 19th through early 20th century, these are Verudela (now home to the city aquarium), Punta Christo, and Monteparadiso.

Beckoning Beaches

Mostly located an easy drive south of the city, they're all pebbly, and include Ambrela (above, the most popular, and especially good for snorkeling), Banjole, Batana, Gortans, Hawaii, Havajsko, Svyetionik, Valkane, Valovine, and Vasaline, with varying levels of amenities.

Other Pleasant Pula Pursuits

Biking is popular locally - not just in the easy-to-navigate city centre but also on beautiful cycling routes in the beautiful surrounding countryside as well as mountain biking.

Tennis

Pula and its surrounding area are home to some 430 high-quality clay courts, a number of them in picturesque seaside settings.

Orca Diving Center

Diving/Snorkeling

Several of the beaches above are great for snorkeling and diving from shore, and a number of local tour operators and outfitters (such as Orca Diving Center) run boat excursions as well as snorkeling tours to sites including underwater caves and reefs teeming with colourful sea life (which usually also include kayaking).

Water Skiing/Wakeboarding

There are a number of thrilling opportunities up and down this coast - one notably being the Wake Park Pula on Valovine Bay. (which also offers "water skating" and "kneeboarding").

Tsunami

Surfing/Windsurfing/Kitesurfing

There are also plenty of spots up and down the coast for a wind-powered adrenaline rush, along with a number of outfitters and schools such as Tsunami.

Other fun stuff includes hiking, kayaking, Segway tours, panoramic flights, and go-karting. As you can see, a wide menu of holiday delights for mind, body, and soul!

Croatia’s Dalmatian coast is chock-full of historic, architecturally charming towns and cities, but few would question that the queen of them all is the walled old quarter of Dubrovnik, thought to have been founded in the 7th century but according to some theories dating back even much earlier, to ancient Hellenic times. In any case, this eight-square-mile cluster of stone buildings and red-tile roofs has as a result become one of Europe’s more popular cities and tourist destinations – not to mention a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

For most of its history the city was called Ragusa, in the Dalmatian language of its founders and early inhabitants as well as in Italian, which became its official language due to the influence of the Venetian Republic (like Italian, Dalmatian is a Latin-descended Romance language ); it got its current Slavic name Dubrovnik when, after World War I, it became part of the new Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes. From the Middle Ages through the early 19th century, Ragusa was an increasingly powerful, tolerant, and progressive maritime republic like Venice at the time – although due to the ups and downs of history and politics it became subject to various kingdoms, states, and empires including Venice itself, Hungary, and the Ottomans. In the 19th century it became part of the Habsburg Empire of Austria-Hungary.

A Full Recovery: Old News Already!

Dubrovnik tourism benefited from the boom in Dalmatian tourism in the 1980s during the last years of Yugoslavia, but was extensively damaged by bombardment during the war that followed the declaration of Croatia’s independence in 1991. I remember visiting in 1997 and seeing shattered buildings and teams still picking landmines out of the surrounding hills. But by the middle of the decade just past, everything had been made good as new, and tourism came back stronger than ever.

It’s not that there are a huge number of “sights” to see (though there are some not to miss, including St. Blaise’s Church and several fine museums). For me, more than anything it’s about basking in the beauty of the Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque architecture; people-watching at sidewalk cafés; shopping for traditional jewelry; and taking in cultural events like the delightful Dubrovnik Summer Festival. At night, especially, the main street, the marble-paved Stradun (above, one of my favorite nocturnal shots anywhere), takes on a romantic, almost magical gleam. It’s sure good to see Dubrovnik back.

And on a recent visit to its Dalmatian coast, I decided to delve deeper into its less explored side of the country, and so I ditched the crowds on the beach, left the tourist trail behind me, and headed deep into the world of music.

Journey into Dalmatian Folk Music

Stretching from the island of Rab to the Bay of Kotor, Dalmatia occupies the eastern coast of the Adriatic. Folk music in this region is strongly influenced by the Mediterranean and often resembles the music in Italy, Spain, and Portugal. It is usually characterized by slow, free rhythm and soothing beats that remind us of the ocean. Dalmatian folk music has inspired many new forms of music and numerous modern artists have incorporated elements of it into their pop songs.

One good example is Oliver Dragojević, an extremely popular singer in Croatia, whose music is strongly influenced by Dalmatian folklore. He first emerged into the music scene in the 1970s during the Split Festival, an annual music event that is still held in Croatia today. He then released many popular hits that featured elements of folk, including ‘Galeb I ja’, a popular Dalmatian anthem. But today, there is much less presence of domestic folk music in Dalmatia due to globalization.

With the aim of conserving traditions, a special annual festival of Dalmatian singing is held in Omiš each year. Now a cultural institution of importance, with Croats from all over the country gather from the end of May till the end of July at the Festival of the Dalmatian Klapas (klapa music is a kind of a capella singing dating back to the liturgical church singing of the mid-19th century, its main elements are harmony and melody more than rhythm. Located just 16 miles from Split, Croatia’s second largest city, the Dalmatian Riviera in and around Omiš is stunning, especially at night, stretching for miles along pebbled beaches, bays and steep cliffs.
