An island that's actually Greek territory's northwesternmost point, Corfu is considered the lushest of the Greek islands, and has ended up with the usual holiday-isle mix of tourism-saturated beach pockets (popular especially with Brits) balanced by bucolic landscapes and villages of its rugged interior. It's thought to be the ispiration for Prospero's island in Shakespeare's The Tempest,

Corfu Town (Kerkyra)

In this lively, cosmopolitan capital (top) you can check out the winding lanes and historic buildings from the Middle Ages onward (its especially known for the Italianate architecture of Corfu's 17th/18th-century occupation by the Venetian Republic). Also visit the exhibition hall and museums, and stroll in impressive Spianada Square. And the young and young at heart will have a lot of fun at the numerous insane night clubs in the downtown area. Corfu town lodgings are the best for fans of history and culture.

Gouvia

Just up the coast from Kerkyra, it's renowned for the ruins of the shipyards built during the Venetian period. Other assets include a wonderful harbor and a the All Saints Greek Orthodox church. Popular especially with fishing and sailing aficionados.

Kassiopi

A little fishing village 37 km from Kerkyra, it boasts an excellent little shorelines, nice bars, and a sweet harbor. Here you'll also find the Kassiopi Castle, dating back to the Byzantine Empire. Staying here is ideal for famillies, couples, beach lovers, and anyone interested in unwinding in a tranquil setting.

Roda

A little town on the north coast, its old town is a picturesque gem and its enormous sandy shoreline is lined with bars, eateries and cafés. Beach bunny paradise!
