A bad time for touring? Depends! In fact they were just perfect for a nocturnal outing I had in Barcelona last winter that was hair raising – in a good way. And what better day than Halloween to tell you about it?

Like most ancient cities, Catalonia’s capital is chock-full full of history, legends – and ghosts. And if that kind of thing gets your ectoplasm going, the city’s tourism office runs a creepy little stroll that might be right up your dark alley.

Conducted from 10:30 pm to midnight on Fridays during winter and Fridays/Saturdays the rest of the year, “Fantasmes de Barcelona” is based on an eponymous book by Catalan author Sylvia Lagarda Mata, who collected stories about ghosts, murders, legends, and mysteries of the city, especially during the Middle Ages.

Read more in our post Chasing Ghosts, Ghouls, and the Devil in Barcelona.

What´s more, most destinations have local tour operators which specialize in introducing visitors to the wonderful culinary experiences and heritage of their towns, cities, and regions: the essence of "slow food" and "slow travel."

Read more in Tripatini contributor Sadie Brooks´ post Exploring the World´s Flavors: 5 Benefits of Food Tours.

Our guide was a youngish chap in a Soviet military getup (bottom left) who feigned drunkenness, kept demanding to see passports, and kept shouting, “Who you are working for?” Eventually he graduated to plying us with vodka; holding forth on the superiority of USSR to the decadent capitalist West whilst waving pictures of Leonid Brezhnev; trying to sign us up for “Communist Party membership”; and warbling a Red Army marching song or two (fortunately, it was an old warhorse called “Katyusha,” to which I just happened to know the words).

Read more in my post A Return to Tallinn, Estonia.

It’s the site of the original settlement in the 1850s, but much of the neo-Renaissance architecture we see today dates from the 1890s, after the mostly wooden original buildings were destroyed by the Great Seattle Fire of 1889. It’s a great place to explore also because of its galleries, eateries, and boutique shops, but my favourite part here (and indeed, one of the most unusual attractions in the entire country) is Underground Seattle – a warren of former shops, rooms, and passageways (above) dating back to the founding era and the Gold Rush that were actually at ground level back then, but cover over in the post-fire rebuilding. Some say it’s haunted down here – I don’t know about that, but it sure is spooky-cool.
