Uruguay's attractions

Uruguay is usually second banana to Argentina, most visitors crossing  the river Plate (Rio Plata) via Buquebus, the high speed ferry from Buenos Aires. There's four main points of interest in this country, which has a Mediterranean climate...

Colonia: a restored Portuguese colonial city on the coast (direct ferry from Buenos Aires)
Montevideo, the capital.
Punta del Este: the pricey resort city jutting into the Rio Plata.
Rocha: a region of unspoiled beaches on the Atlantic

Uruguayans speak a Castilian Spanish very similar to that of Argentina, and the culture is quasi identical  (don't tell them that, however!).

  • Uruguay was one of the highlights of my last trip to Argentina! Seriously, I took the ferry from BsAs to Colonia on the spur of the moment a couple of years ago, and was so pleasantly surprised! It's a gorgeous colonial city, and the parrillada I had there rivalled anything I ate in Argentina!
