It's hard to imagine that through most of its history, the country known as Thailand was called Siam until 1939 - just 80 years ago. Today it remains brimming with bucket-list-worthy experiences. Traveling for work as a TV host for my show Travel Time with Linda, I get to experience many beautiful places, but Thailand is one I especially wish to experience over and over again. From mind-blowing tropical beaches, opulent royal palaces, ancient ruins and ornate temples displaying figures of Buddha to soothing traditional Thai massage therapies, there is no shortage of magical fabulosity to encounter.

Thailand's capital has the proverbial something for everyone - a mix of exotic traditional culture, cuisine and shopping with no shortage of fun from tame to notoriously naughty. Days are sunny and beautiful, nights are exciting, and there's never a dearth of things to do. It's perhaps for this amazing versatility that Bangkok is often referred to as a tourist paradise. The city of course also serves as a gateway to many other parts of Thailand, including Phuket and the other islands and beach destinations; Chiang Mai; Koh Samui; and other popular destinations.

Thais will spend these days with family, going to temples, parties and water fights (this last - the ultimate water war - is a common sight in Thailand). The date of the Songkran Festival used to be decided based on the lunar calendar, but now the date is fixed at April 13 to 16 this year. As one of Thailand's biggest celebrations, the public holiday has become Thailand's busiest holiday, also attracting thousands of travelers. The opening ceremony of the Thai Water Festival takes place on the morning of April 13th, and though it officially lasts only three days, many people extend the holiday to one week, especially in Pattaya.

This Buddhist celebration includes various rich traditional activities. The first morning begins with a merit-making, such as releasing birds and fish (even larger animals like buffalo and cows). After that, many Thais visit local temples and give food to Buddhist monks. Another traditional practice is to pour water on Buddhist statues as well as on people (in modern times many young people have adapted this to use squirt guns; see below), symbolizing the purification and cleansing of iniquity and bad luck. It's also a day of family reunion, when people who move away usually return to the homes of their loved ones and elders (reverence for ancestors is an important part of Songkran tradition as in Thai culture generally).

Why Railay Beach is one of this blogger's 5 most gorgeous places to visithttps://tripatini.com/group/thailand/forum/topics/why-railay-beach-is-one-of-this-blogger-s-5-most-gorgeous-places-2018-11-17T20:26:20.000Z2018-11-17T20:26:20.000ZTripatinihttps://tripatini.com/members/Tripatini
