KICK UP YER KILT IN SUN VALLEY!

SUN VALLEY CELTIC FAIRE & SCOTTISH HEAVY EVENTS

JUNE 5TH AND 6TH, 2010

Dig your kilt out of the closet and get ready for some merriment at the Sun Valley Celtic Faire & Scottish Heavy Events on June 5th and 6th, 2010 in Sun Valley, Idaho.  This new event will feature an array of popular traditional Scottish “heavy events” competitions for both professional and amateur participants, as well as lively Celtic music and dancers, vendors and other festivities.  

FRIDAY, JUNE 4th, 7-9 p.m.

Pub Crawl – join in the festivities as the men in kilts accompanied by the Band “Guess When” visit local establishments, play a song or two, and generate excitement for the Games.  FREE to the public

 

SATURDAY, JUNE 5TH

$5 Spectator fee/ children under 8 free

 

1 – 2 p.m.Challenge of the Cities…The Cities of Sun Valley, Ketchum, Hailey, Bellevue and Carey will compete for the title of “Strongest City”.  Competition will be a tug of war tournament and the winner will win bragging rights as well as a traveling trophy that will be passed on to future winners.

 

1:30 – Registration opens for the “Youth Challenge”

 

2:30 – 9 p.m. “Youth Challenge Competition – Competition begins at 2:30.  All entrants receive a commemorative t-shirt and medals for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place will be given for each event as well as best overall score. 

3 age brackets – 8-10 yrs, 11-13yrs, and 14-16 yrs.  Cost to participate - $10

There will be 8 individual competitions  

·        Obstacle course: a timed event with each competitor clearing a set of obstacles in a foot race, designed to test speed and agility.

·        Weight for height:  throwing a weight over a bar, with the bar raising at each turn, eliminating competitors until only one remains.

·        Weight for distance:  Each competitor throws a weight for distance from a trig, each competitor gets three attempts, and the farthest throw wins.

·        Scottish hammer:  Each competitor throws a shaft made of cane or PVC pipe from a standing position, getting three tries, the farthest distance wins.

·        Stone Put: Each competitor throws a stone from a standing position, getting three tries, the farthest distance wins.

·        Foot race: time trial for best in sprints.

·        Tug-o-war:  Team event,  best of three contests

·        Caber turn:  turning a log over and away, attempting to place it straight away from competitors’ point of throw.

Ongoing All Day Saturday

The Band “Guess When” will be performing on the Main Stage starting at 1 p.m.

Irish Dance Idaho” will also have several performances throughout the day

Local food and beverage vendors will be providing yummy nourishment and libations

 

7-9 p.m. Pub Crawl

SUNDAY, JUNE 6TH

$5 spectator fee/ children under 8 free

 

9 A.M. – 5 P.M.  “Sun Valley Strongman Competition

Registration fee is $15 for athletes, and preregistration can be completed online at www.saaaidaho.org 

Day of registration begins at 8:30 on Sunday

All Competitors will receive a T-shirt

7 divisions of athletes will be competing from novice to expert

(judges for novice division will be on hand to teach and instruct those who might not have competed before)

Athletes will compete in the following traditional Scottish strongman games including:

·        Throwing of the weights

·        Putting the Stone

·        Hammer Throwing

·        Caber Toss

·        Sheaf Toss

·        Weight over Bar

Local food and beverage vendors will be providing yummy nourishment and libations
