There are a lot of things to love about Colorado's capital and largest city. Its setting alone is an awe-inspiring one, in the shadow of the soaring Rocky Mountains - your first time seeing the Mile-High City in the distance as you approach is one that you will never forget. And once you're here there's is also a lot to see and do, from attractions and culture to nightlife (a seemingly endless array of bars, pubs, clubs, and music venues) and sports (with local football, basketball, baseball, soccer, and hockey teams).

Denver is also a paradise for foodies, with many, many dining options including a truly impressive menu of cuisines from the region and around the world, and at a wide range of price points.

The USA's 19th largest city (pop. 693,000, metro area 3.1 million), and at 5,280 feet (1,609 meters) its highest-altitude, has come a long way from its humble beginnings in 1859 as a gold-rush mining town. Sleepy at first, much of the "Mile-High City's" growth didn't pick up steam until the 1890s, with the real boom not kicking in till after World War II. Today, this dynamic, high-tech bastion is a major business, cultural, and sports power which trends young and cosmopolitan without letting go of its outdoors-oriented lifestyle.

Sitting on a rolling plain astride the South Platte River in north central Colorado just east of (not, as many assume, actually in) the Rocky Mountains, Denver has certainly not escaped many of the common urban ills of the early 21st century, but it does tend to be cleaner, more polite, and more progressive than many others in the United States.

How would you like to spend a night or more at a hotel once frequented by Clark Gable, Ingrid Berman, Marilyn Monroe and a long list of other Tinseltown luminaries? Or snuggle down under the sheets at a former stagecoach stop along the famous Chisolm Trail which played host to George Custer, the cavalry commander in the Civil and American Indian Wars, and Jesse James, who needs no introduction? If luxury and elegance are your preference, how about the Hotel Du Pont in Wilmington, Delaware, which opened in 1913, was built to rival the finest European lodgings of the time in stylishness and beauty?

A hotel can be more, much more, than just a place to catch a good night’s sleep. Properties throughout the United States offer interesting stories of famous guests, accommodations that range from laid back to lavish, and opportunities to snooze with intriguing chapters of American history. At this stay-at-home time, they also provide a welcome escape for people seeking a change of scenery without having to travel far from where they live, or happen to be visiting, in the USA.

Welcome to February! Since 1970, it's also been Black History Month in the USA, and since 1995 in Canada, as well (whereas it's observed in October in the United Kingdom, Ireland, and the Netherlands). And though the reason for the African diaspora was tragic and horrific - the brutal, centuries-long trafficking of human slaves - it has also enriched many parts of the world, and indeed, world culture as a whole. So what better way to kick BHM off than with a look at a dozen of the most fascinating destinations to experience the culture and contributions of the sons and daughters of Africa across the world?

Science continues to prove that being in nature has benefits for our mental health, this evidence boosting the popularity of holidays where we are able to reconnect with the world around us. To ensure you stay positive this year, riding holiday specialist Ranch Rider has created a top ten list of horseback escapes where you can maximise the feel-good potential of a week in the saddle - their selection based on location, available activities and the “nature factor” (experience and location were rated by Ranch Rider to give an overall score).

read post

If you're looking to step into the boots of a real cowboy on your riding holiday look no further than Ranch Rider, as the tour operator is run by keen equestrians and horse owners, their passion to help you get more out of your time in the saddle.

Tony Daly, managing director of Ranch Rider, comments, “Even though branding, roping and cattle work are available activities at most working ranches, there are always subtle key differences in the guest experience from one ranch to another. From the benefits of combining yoga with horse riding to learning to rope with rodeo legends, we’ve prepared a selection of ranch holidays where you can get to grips with being in the saddle in a way that feels tailor-made for you.”

Welcome to an unexpected world in which everyone seems to be intent upon you having a good time. Take ski school for example - in Europe, some still have the attitude “You are here to learn first, have fun second.” Whilst in North America it’s the other way around.

For this is a world where “standing in line” (queuing) has been raised to a virtual art form, with a polite alternate interweaving of lift lines and a special one for singles. No chair ever goes up empty. In fact you might even be scolded if you leave a chair going up with an unoccupied seat. Regimented? A bit, but everything moves swiftly and efficiently because of it.

There are more rules and regulations here, too, with piste police in evidence on many of the runs, and umpteen signs warning you not to leave the prepared trails. Ducking under the ropes can easily lead to a court appearance and even jail. There are rules for (not) drinking and skiing/snowboarding. Speeding through a designated slow area is strictly taboo, and could cost you your lift ticket.

On the plus side, the level of service on the mountain in Rockies resorts is amazing. Although conditions in the Alps are improving, surly staff are not uncommon.

Unlike Europe, the whole ski area and the resort, most of the hotels, ski schools, childcare and even restaurants are usually operated by a single company. There’s a co-ordinated effort to keep the customer happy.

And though many of these resorts are relatively small compared to Europe, size doesn’t seem to matter when there’s so little queuing and the trails are so perfectly groomed. Then there are the little touches than enhance the holiday experience, such as free tissues and lift maps supplied at nearly all lift stations, and “mountain hosts” who show you around the trails – again, free of charge.

Without further ado, here are my pick of six of the best resorts in the USA Rockies... keep reading

The location accommodated Penrose's dual goals of offering an otherworldly oasis in the Wild West and providing a launching point for more rugged leisure pursuits like speeding up hairpin turns on a dirt track to Pike's Peak in his Pierce Arrow "Yellow Devil" race car.

Penrose tapped his vast fortune, much of it made in nearby Cripple Creek, to build The Broadmoor from the ground up. No expense was spared, with the main building designed by architectural firm Warren and Wetmore (designers of New York City's Grand Central Station), while the grounds were laid out by none other than Frederick Law Olmsted. Processed gold ore tailings were added to exterior cement inlays reflecting the sun's golden hue. Man made Cheyenne Lake, an enduring feature on the property to this day, was used for swimming, fishing, ice skating, and even water skiing but is now a serene focal point ringed by a walking path tying together the main buildings on the Broadmoor's 5,000-acre campus.

Abandoned towns and villages can be found all over the world. But there’s something especially haunting and charismatic both about the remnants of settlements that photogenically preserve the look and feel of the 19th-century Wild West. Especially because we’ve all seen them in so many movie Westerns, they evoke a kind of romantic, Old West magic, akin to real-life theme parks. Which in some cases they have become, tarted up for tourists and/or as movie sets; others have been preserved but not tarted up.
